Ellipsoid lights on a US E30?
« on: February 24, 2013, 12:34:51 PM »
Hi!

Can anyone please tell me if I can install "straight through" a European ellipsoid headlights set on a US E30?

Thanks.

Sure you can.  There are only three wires you'll see on a US-spec E30 per side.  I can't recall colors, but there is a low-beam, high beam and common ground.  The high-beam wire runs right through the dual-filament low-beam bulb as well.  IIRC all Euro bulbs have low-wattage 'pilot lights' in the low beam housing.  You'd need to run a jumper wire down to the parking or side marker light for those to work properly.  Here's a diagram I Googled:

I don't think I've met any incandescent bulbs that cared about polarity...so if those are the wire colors and the Euro headlights are only single-filament, wire them up like this:
Left low beam - Yellow/White and Brown
Left high beam - White/Violet and Brown
Right low beam - Yellow/Blue and Brown
Left high beam - White/Blue and Brown

IMHO I strongly recommend lineman's splices with solder and heat shrink.  It's a necessity for this job - high resistance from standard taps or crimps will make the bulbs dim and potentially melt connectors/cause shorts/kill batteries/burn up some wire.  Save yourself trouble with good clean splices.

Thanks Dave! really a complete insite on the work!

So, the fact that US and EU cars have different front grilles will not affect its installation, correct?

I notice that you've had a E24.... I also have a 86 635CSi (Euro Spec).... Great cars!

Yep - grilles are no different as far as function.

You're lucky - a Euro non-catalyzed M30B35 motor has about 15% better output than my US M30B33 did.  Even better (for you), from what I've heard the Euro car is about 350 pounds lighter, mostly due to the far prettier bumpers.

Do you have the later Motronic M30 with the one piece intake manifold, or an M90 with the six individual bolt-on intake runners?  That Euro high-compression M90 is supposed to be the best of them all...perhaps excepting the M6...but IMHO the M88 needs a lot more care than I'm willing to give...

Mine is a M30 but I am not sure if it runs on a Motronic injection: I bellieve that this came out in 87/88 and my car is an 86...

All the Motronic M30's have that one-piece intake manifold, like this:

Older LH-Jet models have an eight-piece manifold they inherited from the E3 & E9.
