I just resolved the lifter issue with my supplier and have the new lighter VW lifters. The part number is 050 109 309 xx I am pretty sure this is the part number. The important part is the first three numbers be 050 and not 034. The major VW parts supplier shipped out a bunch of the wrong lifters to a bunch of retailers. So when you do decide to order these light lifter make sure they verify that the ones thay are shipping you weigh 48-54 grams depending on the oil volume inthem when they get weighed. The ones I got are made in germany by INA and after I cleaned out all of the oil weighed 49 grams each and 53 with oil. This is significantly less than the stock lifters that were 68 with out oil and 72 with oil.

I bought my lifter from James West at Four Seasons tunning in California. He was great to deal with even though I got the wrong wones from him but he took them back and resolved the issue with his supplier and was very quick in getting me my correct lifters. You can call him at 714-997-5842.

I also measured the placement of the oil supply hole in relation to the oil groove on the lifter and they are a perfect match. With the lifter all the way up in the cam tower the oil supply hole lines up perfectly with the lifter wo there will be no problem with these lifters.

A side note, If you a planning a N/A rebuild get the M44 rods. I got some and removed some weight off ot the beams and the small ends and got them down to 470 grams with out the bolts and 520 with the bolts.

I thought about m44 rods but since i might want to get a dasc in the future i dont know how well they would hold up at 7200rpm with the longer stroke, the next cheapest option seeems to be VAC's which are around 500g and cost 899

The M44 uses 140mm rods just like the M42

yeah but they are also cast and have much less material then the m42 rod. Sure there are many dasc'ed m44's but they have a 6500rpm redline and a 83.5mm stroke

M44 Rods are forged and just lighter than the M42 rods. They are of a newer design which did not need as much material. I have a set of both a dn I am positive the M44 rods are forged. After alittle work with a belt sander I got my set down to 470 grams with out rod bolts and 520 grams with rod bolts.

I am inluding pictures of the lifters and the M44 rods and my cam gears that I had machined to take a few grams off.

i could have sworn they were cast, I always hear that the m44 has cast internals but maybe its just the crank. Do you think they would be up to the task? the next problem is getting some by thrusday or friday

these are the same style rods as the M50 engines and the later S series stuff.

After the grinding I will need to have them shot peened and balanced with the pistons, crank, flywheel,pressure plate.

Anyone know what model VW these lifters came in?  I've been searching around and can't find them.  One reason I ask is that there are many performance VW shops that make various lightweight lifters so I'm curious how light you can get these parts.

Also as I read through these posts on the M42/M44 engine buildup, I'm noticing several references to parts compatibility between engines.  I've seen references to M50 valves, various valvesprings, etc.  I'm in the process of planning my M42 buildup and since I have access to performance parts through my vendors, I might be able to source a few parts at discounts if I knew what could be used without modification.  If anyone is interested, let me know, but I'll need to know what works.  My background up to now is with the M20 so I'm trying to research things but any help would be appreciated.
