You can use M42 starter just replace M42 FREE WHEEL PINION to Bosch p/n  100 620 9618 and it will be solved ;) One guy discovered that simple swap in Lithuania ;)

how hard is it to replace the wheel pinion?

It is not hard as I remember. You will need just simple tools.

Strange things are if you google P/N and check dimensions they give you sometimes different... Double check with m42 bendix before ordering, but the guy assembled it without any modifications using P/N I gave you.
