M42 Hillclimb Build
« on: February 03, 2013, 01:11:35 PM »
First of all, I am new to this forum and am so glad I found an E30 site. I love my 318i and am thinking about building it into a hillclimb car, but I would like to keep my M42 engine. Who carries any performance parts for it? Looking for some ideas on what works and what doesn't. Would like to get 8,000 to 9,000 rpms out of it. Also thinking of boost. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
Steve

Hi,
First of all good roll cage which goes to rear suspension (beam, shock absorbers), differential mounting points and in the front also with top X which goes to suspension mounting points from main tubes.

1. Buy/make a good suspension. Coilover suspension (XYZ-with rear coil over springs). All not necessary bushings (differential, rear suspension beam) should be replaced with aluminium. Rear/front suspension arms should be with spherical bearings or hard plastic (ptfe or polyurethane). Optional rear suspension toe/camber adjustment would be great. Remove steering guibo and replace it with aluminium for better feel of traction. Swap steering column to E46 or Z3 which are better ratio. It is possible to drive without power steering but it depends how fit you are ;)
2. Transmission: gearbox with 5th gear ratio 1:1 (from E36/46) and medium rear LSD(modified/rebuild) differential with correct ratio for your track. Flywheel swap to lightened m20/custom flywheel and clutch.
3. First you can start with good 7200rpm chip and finish nobody knows when :D

Depends what do you want? Some my parts are from (good price/performance):
Catcams for cams
Supertech for all valve train
JE pistons
Pauter rods
ARP
cometic
ITB from E36M3 S50B30 or B32 engine.
ECU - Megasquirt

Some of them is the best way to buy on Ebay.

But I think better start from suspension. We have one guy in Lithuania which produce lots of things for BMW E30 https://www.facebook.com/pages/IRP/507075085975849?sk=photos_stream

Dont forget about good brake pads or all brake system upgrade.

Definitely doing a brembo big brake kit, Polly front control ARM bushings, solid diff mounts, isc coilovers (or eibach) 3 way adjustable, upper strut plates, and rear camber and toe links.

Do same for rear arms. After that you will be very surprised how stable you car is. Do not buy anything like powerflex because they are too soft. Look for something with hardness Shore 90A.

Do you mean https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=507126592637365&set=pb.507075085975849.-2207520000.1359941862&type=3&theater or something like this? I done this conversion but with 4x100 and smaller brake discs 288x25 to fit in R15 wheels. But today I would go for new willwood light calipers 6-4pot in the front and 2pot in the rear. They are much lighter than not real racing brembo. And for some brembo calipers it is not so easy to find good brake pads so check availability before you buy.

There really isnt a whole lot of aftermarket engine parts for the m42 in the us. i know theres more in the euro market but the biggest here would be metric mechanic or vac motorsports. both are very expensive. everything in my m42 turbo car came from vac. runs like a champ. you could easily see 200whp with a stock m42 and boost. our bottom end is pretty bulletproof and top is pretty solid as well. 10psi on a stock m42 should see 200whp i would assume. on 9psi with 8.0:1 cr my cars at 201whp and 198wtq. with stock compression you should beat that.

Another route is boring for m/s5x pistons and increase stroke with an m44 crank. mix and match parts from other engines to create a little monster. But if you want to spin it at 9000rpms... Id keep the stock crank, maybe 85mm pistons, lower compression if you decide to go turbo, lighten up the valve train and talk to catcams about making a cam for you thats good up to 9k. i know mm has a cam for 8k.

and youll want to do something about the trans too. g240 will take a little abuse but i imagine youll kill it pretty quickly. and dont waste your time going to a g260. ive had nothing but problems with my swap. use a zf trans and find a recipe that someone else has used and that is proven to work. know exactly what tob, pinion bearing, etc. itll save you a lot of headache. trust me there.

Depends from regulations in your class you willing to run N/A or F/I.

I would better go for stroker with 8000-8500rpm. At 9000 rpm you will have problems because of oil cavitation and will end up with blown engine.

Ive been told on this board many times and done some research and found that gt28 < efr 6258

what have you decided about engine specs? If you figure that out we can easier pick out a turbo. this thread here has lots of info http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=275180

Yeah EFR 6258 is the appropriate size of that line. A 2871 would be a nice turbo too, but I would much prefer the EFR.

Any Garrett or any other turbo can be made to fit the car. Are you asking where to get a manifold with a T25 flange?

Thanks to everyone who has replied. We havnt decided exactly what were gonna do with the engine yet. We may keep the m42 or go with an s14 or even take the motor from my roomates e36 m3. But we are starting with suspension
