Any tips or suggestions on removing M42 engine?
« on: December 19, 2006, 09:53:28 AM »
I've done a few engine swaps on other cars but this will be the first on an E30 doing just a R&R with another M42.

Any suggestions/tips or snags to watch out for?

What resources do you have available?

If you have a lift - drop it from below with the motor attached to the s.frame.

If you're going to pick it from above - a load level equipped cherry picker comes handy.

Patience while executing is essential. With the m42 you can disconnect the tranny with ease (by comparison to m20s) provided you have the right extensions.

I plan on picking it from the top with the hood off but no load leveler. I know the load leveler makes things a lot easier but that's why I'm taking off the hood.

It's not separating the tranny I'm worried about, it's mating it back together. Hopefully I'll get lucky and have the splines line up relatively easily.

Any other suggestions?

patience like e9nine said...

make sure you don't forget to disconnect anything!

when i pulled the motor from my parts car, i noticed that i forgot to disconnect the fuel lines..

ALSO! make sure you take the lever out of the nylon cup that it sits in.

follow the manual too (the online one), its very thorough!

goodluck and post pics of the progress!!

Do you have a link to this? I want to see if it's the same one I have stored on my computer.
