if i was to try to go about building an m42 for a boosted/drifting application, where would i start? should i try to find an entire engine or just main part, ie; block head? im planning on putting the best internals in for my budget i can find. this isnt going to be an over the weekend build so ill be taking my time.
i know people have thier own opinions about the e30 and the m42 being a drift car, but im doing it, so if we can spare me the dont do its, id appreciate it. im just looking for some advice on how to do this with the best bang for the buck but on a budget. thanks in advance.

all you would really need to replace is the pistons

Use an E36 M42 block, that way if you go with a bigger turbo/more boost in the future you can take advantange of the knock sensors. Also, looking into Megasquirt SnF would be a good idea for forced induction.

I'm pleased somebody wants do make another E30 M42 drift car. They are well balanced and highly tossable with decent suspension. But in all honesty, you don't need boost to get a 318is sideways. You need a great clutch/LWF, some bolt-on power, and awesome driving skills. You won't need power unless you are competitively drifting against high-powered machines.

i can already get my bim bim sidways as is. drifting her isnt the problem. and my last drift car was a 400 hp supra. i can do it with just about anything i get behind the wheel of. i was also thinking about the itb route and all that stuff. just trying to reinforce my love for boost.

I would recommend the E30 block/engine or at least head with an aftermarket ECU for knock.  The E30 head has larger valves and stiffer valve springs.  You might want to look at the M47 stroker crank as well.  I believe that you'll want knock regardless of the boost level, but YMMV.
