Lifter install
« on: November 08, 2012, 08:44:45 PM »
So my head gasket went boom and had to pull the head on my m42.  I've never done a head with cam towers built like this... is there going to be a trick to get the lifters back on when installing the towers?
When I pulled the towers they all fell out just sliding them up a little bit.

Anyone got any tips for when I go to throw all this back together?  Right now the plan is to replace the front timing cover gaskets and crank seal and chain tensioner along with all the gaskets that come in the usual head gasket kit.

Thanks,
Dustin

they are kinda supposed to go back in the spot they came from, ideally.  if they got all mixed up when they fell out, that aint great.    I would then just feel how each one fits in its bore before you use it in that postion and at least make sure it slides easy.

They will slide easily in any place. They do not grow with years ;)

The trick which I was using to install them back is:
install them to  the carrier put steel ruler on top and holding that ruler turn over and put it on the studs then it sits in place you can remove ruler ;)

That is so simple it makes sense.  I was thinking about using string!

 Thanks,

A vaguely related question, anyone purchase the head gasket kit from Pelican?  I'm curious if I also need to buy the upper timing case gaskets or if I just need to get the lower case gaskets with it so I can reseal the front of the engine with a new crank seal.

The kit I got came with upper end gaskets. I had to get the lower timing case gaskets separately
