Intermittent single chime?
« on: December 13, 2006, 11:14:50 AM »
As the title says, every once in awhile I get a single chime without any warning/maintenence lights turning on.  It did it a few times when I first got the car and it didn't do it again till the other day.  Anybody have any ideas what this could be?

It will do that when the temperature is below like 3 degrees C I believe.  Same if it is above 38 C, if memory serves me right.

hmm I'm not sure if that is it.  I've driven recently at 5F and didn't hear that.  I thought maybe it was a low fuel indicator?  I was low on gas and filled it up, but I heard the tone once after putting in a full tank before I got home.  I'm sure it's nothing, I'm just new to the car and trying to figure out some little things about it here and there.

cool thanx fellas.  Wonder if I was running a little hot the other day?  Once warmed up, my car stays pretty balls on usually.  I'll have to keep my eye on that one next time I hear that.  Wonder why I didn't hear it on that super cold morning start the other day, 4 degrees F.  I only drove into the city that day to see how she did on a brutal morning like that, and it took awhile to warm up before I headed out ;)

When memo is pushed it alerts you every hour.
I also believe it will alert you  to ice forming temperature .

ahhh, I bet that was it.  As I thought about it, every time it chimed, I'd scan everything to make sure all was well.  I would have noticed if I was running 20F hot for sure.  BUT, my OBC does the common display freakout of doom every once in awhile, and it was having a bad day that afternoon.  Usually doing a Fonzy tap on it fixes it, and I know I was knocking it while driving a couple of times with my eyes on the road.  Probably knocked the memo =P

I've been doing a lot of coolant and general work lately to what is a newer car to me, and to fix up what a bad shop with a surprisingly good rep did to her while I was in a sling =/  Long story....  I'm at high alert to signs and symptoms before making a trip out of town for xmas.  Thanx for easing my paranoia hehe.

someone referred to that as the "predator countdown" haha

everytime mine would flip out i'd be like oh shit...predator pulled the switch.

Mine has long since stopped doing that because i've replaced the 6 button OBC with the more functional 13-button OBC !!! Loving it :D

I'll do something eventually to fix it.  I'll probably take it apart and clean the ribbon connector.  Looking at photos like Alpine's of the dash out are amazing!   I'm not doing that unless there are more pressing problems behind there. I know I'd get it all apart, stand back, and panic that I'd never get it back together :D

Gentlemen,

I read the thread and never in a million years would I have realized there was such a thing as 3 degrees and a chime to advise you.  My guess would have been the seat belt sensor was bad.  3 degrees, whew, that hurts.

If you get the predator countdown, I believe it's an internal issue and no cleaning will fix it. Let me know if you need help in swapping out the OBC part. It's a 5 minute ordeal and you don't need to take out the dash.

As for the cold warning, I believe it's 38 degrees F for us US folks. ;)

BTW, were you on I-290 westbound today? I saw a white 318is around 290 and Harlem. I've probably only seen a few on a roads around me so far outside of BMW meets.

I've read through this a few times too, and I went back and forth on whether you were talking about engine temp or just exterior temp.  I've finally settled on exterior temp with the talk of icing and such, so I think I have it nailed down.  I'm making the assumption that it only chimes when you have the temp display on the obc and it is in the extreme temp ranges??  This would make more sense to me and nail down what I heard the other day.  On the 4F morning, I just turned on the temp for a second.  It's torture to drive around looking at that temp.  The other day I heard the chime a lot, it was just under freezing and real windy.  I think I had the temp display on almost the whole time.  Am I right? :D

No that wasn't me on 290.  I work downtown, so I usually take the train in unless I know I'm working late and that parking is covered by my expense report!  Speaking of, there was a killer clean Red 318is parked by the AON centert the other day.  I put an m42 flyer on it =]  I wonder if it was the one I was looking at, but he wanted 5k for it.  It's super duper clean though.

I was thinking you had to take the dash out for the 13 obc conversion?  Well to make it much easier anyways.
