The lower oil pan is, thankfully, SUPER easy to deal with. I busted a hole in mine in ~2006 and put a good 70000 miles on it with JB Weld slathered on the outside as a patch. I did remove and clean it first, though.
For the pan gasket, I recommend applying a THIN coat of Permatex Ultra Grey silicone RTV to both the lower & upper pan mating surfaces. That will keep the lower pan gasket from leaking. Actually, you would be A-OK JUST using the RTV and no gasket. Again, a thin coat on each side (run a bead and spread it with a finger).
