Author Topic: ostrich 2.0 with ITB's (Read 9963 times)

Hi Guys!

I have a few questions, hope you can help me.

I've got an E30 M42 engine, and I'd like to put an ITB on it. I have the stuff, the airbox is on the way. I would use the stock AFM at first, with stock ECU.

1. Will it work?

I mean, will the stock ecu work with the ITB's? The TPS, AFM, injectort will remain stock.

2. Does anyone use an ostich 2.0 for a bit of tuning? I don't have much money to spend and I wouldn't like to buy a stuff and than just look at it on the shelf. My stock chip number is 1267356214. I've downloaded TunerPro and BMW_175_318i_soft378.xdf file.
Is it good or the xdf is not correct for this chip? :confused: Any experience on this?

Im already tuning mine... You'll need the .xdf file from bmwconnect.

You may have to upgrade injectors.. Im running s52 injectors 21.5lbs/hr

Only problem im having right now is running super rich at cold start.. And i need to adjust my tps so when i data trace the WOT map it will read it. So more tuning needed...

Already did a couple dyno runs but needed to fix a few things before i head back to the dyno.

Sorry misread... Is that the xdf from bmwconnect?

But no you cannot run itbs on stock ecu.. You will run super lean and damage your motor

You can run ITB's on the stock ECU... the E30M3 did it. You just need bigger injectors and different tuning.

I was going to run the stock ECU on my ITB's for my stroker motor and actually talked to Mark D about it, but decided to go with MSII. I wanted the ability to tune the car myself. Not that easy on an ECU unless your Barry, JC, or Mark D.

Can certainly be done and it's less difficult then say tuning for a turbo. With every custom tune like this you need time to find out what works for you and the engine. Don't expect a overnight fix when tuning with a ostrich. It's a DIY ordeal but fun when you get the hang of it

Unless you are increasing the engine's displacement and porting the head, I think that stock injectors should be fine. Metric Mechanic told me that the stockers will (barely) support their 205BHP Rally 2.1L engine.

Hi!

The xdf file is from the tunerpro.net webpage. Is that a correct working xdf? I donno bmwconnect. Where can I get, the correct xdf?

The main AFM is the same as the stock, so it will measure air correct.

Btw I'm running on 3.5bar (50.7psi) fuel pressure. The stock is 3bar (43.5psi) so I think it won't be lean, is it?

Hi!

Wasn't ostrich enough for you? I thought MS or VEMS or Motec stc are much for supercharged/turboed enginges.

I have friends that had MS running and thought it would work well for a DIY on my car. Very simple tuning process and very versatile. Not to say that the stock ECU can't be used but I wanted something different that can be tuned easily after every performance change. I'm running ViPec on my M3.

But MS is a bit expensive for me and I donno if I'll use all the functions.

I think dealing with fuel tables is enough. Or maybe I'm wrong...

Stock Ecu = stock dme +stock chip.
I know this won't be enough for a long time, but using the stock dme + an ostrich may help me... I just want to hear experiances about this way of tuning. :rolleyes:

You can absolutely do what you are looking for in a stock set up. The difficult part is getting the timing right to optimize what you're trying to do. You will then no longer have a "stock" chip.

I run the dBilas ITB set with an Ostrich 2.0. Works great. The only difficultly I've had is perfecting the 'Acceleration fuel enrichment' to deal with the rapid increase of airflow when initially opening the throttles. The stock throttle opens the top plate a fraction, before opening the bottom so the airflow is more gradual.

I also haven't worked out how to log my o2 readings off my LC-1 against rpm, throttle position.

You can buy a logging device for LC-1. Didn't you try a fuel pressure regulator?

I think that this might just be inherent to the Motronic M1.7. As far as I can tell, the ECU is a little "slow" in its response time since it was designed for a TB far from the valves, and the relatively slow-responding AFM. I remember driving a bone-stock 1995 M3 that a friend owned, no ITBs or anything, and the throttle response was waaaaaaay faster. The ECU was probably programmed to read the throttle and air flow inputs much more frequently, and it had a MAF which is a much faster sensor than the AFM. You might need to go stand-alone to really improve throttle response. A number of guys with MegaSquirt have reported an improvement there.

Yep, MS would be the perfect solution but it's a bit expensive for me.

Anyway, at WOT the ecu doesn't use the AFM/MAF or the NBO2.

M3 has a lighter flywheel it improves revving and better throtle response.
