323/325 exhaust line on 318is E30 doable?
« on: October 19, 2012, 02:32:44 AM »
Hi everyones.

Let me tell you my idea.

I have a 318is E30, and i'm putting full Mtech2 bodykit on it. But the original rear silencer look just ridiculous with the Mtech2 rear bumper :(
Biggest problem, i'm in France, and here, the don't like modifying the car with non homologated stuff... and homologated one cost a lot...

So, basically, i was thinking of going the "original bmw route" by this I mean, use original parts from other BMW, E30 if possible.

So after thinking of fitting only the rear silencer from a 323i or 325i with a Y shape pipe, i tought "why don't fit the whole exhaust?" So swapping from single tube to twin tube exhaust from a 323i/325i.

Did someone ever do it on a 318is? i was thinking of keeping the original header (obviously, M20 one won't fit :p) and as all know the M42 header is 4:2:1, so basically i want to adapt the 323i/325i exhaust to the M42 header were there is normally the 2 pipes that go into 1.

Don't know if i'm understandable, i'll show some pics to make it clearer ;)

If you have more info on that :D

I have twin-pipe 4-2 exhaust, but unfortunately this system came with engine, so I never tried original one, so cannt compare.

I suppose that you could do that, but it is,only, imho of course, a useless excercise.  The most efficient exhaust design for a 4 banger is 4to 2 to 1,  so you are using valuable resources of time and money on a project with no advantage or even  a possible disadvantage over the present design.   Having said that,  if you are determined, have at it.    What I would do is cut the outlet of the stock system, and weld a resonated 2 pipe outlet on there.     presto-  instant cool looking exhaust:D

Just make a custom exhaust. In USA you have big choice of various manufacturers like: http://www.magnaflow.com.
E30 318is M42
E36 318is M44

yeah but unfortunately i'am not in the USA, and one of the reason that lead me to do this kind of exhaust job is because I want to have an OEM rear silencer with two exit (like M3 e30, 323 ans 325 ones) cuz here in france police don't really like non homologated parts on car...
