My cv boots are cracked and need to be either replaced or serviced soon. Is it best to buy remaned, grease and replace the boots, or buy a used pair that's in good condition? Is there anything else that should be replaced/serviced while these are off my car?

After I bought the car we replaced sub frame bushings, trailing and bearings. All good. When we replaced the axles we had the help of a guy who "done it before" with a mallet. Well, the boots started leaking. So, I looked at repacking, OEM and remans. Ended up getting OEM because of a discount connection. It was cheaper than paying for a repack. (I lost my lift contact!)

While you are there check the diff bushing. I wanted poly but replaced with delrin and the noise (whining) could be from the solid, hard delrin. Thats another thing for another day.

Now is a good time to check the diff or go LSD, brake lines, sensors and bearings. It was costly but now I can drive the **** outta the car.

Diff bushing was replaced not too long ago. I'll take the other stuff you mentioned into consideration, thanks.

Couple of ideas for you.
If you want to replace axles call Mardi @ Raxles. I just gave him call and he quoted $174 per. I have used him in the past for my wifes Volvo. The quality and service was great. He uses many new parts not reman.

If you replace boots there are two types - hopfully I can explain this. The first which work the best have a radius on the ID where the boot meets up with the CV side. The radius matches a flange or lip on the CV helping to keep the boot in place.

The other type is flat and has nothing to grab on to the CV. This type almost wants to slide off the CV once the retaining band is installed.

I own both, I bought one set from Pelican and one set from Bav Auto. Unfortunately I can't remember which set came from where. Both sets came with grease and retaining bands. On one of the sets the bands were not long enough.

The job was a bit messy but nothing a bunch of blue Scott towels couldn't handle.
