318ti (M42 motor) stalling when warm
« on: September 29, 2012, 06:33:34 PM »
Hi there

hope it's OK to post about a 318ti since it does have an M42 motor.

I'm having problems with the motor stalling once the car is warmed up. It simply won't hold an idle. Here's what I've done:

  • New Crank sensor
  • New PCV
  • New Intake boot
  • Gotten rid of all vacuum leaks
  • Cleaned ICV

Any Suggestions would be much appreciated

Any check engine lights?

How old is the O2 sensor? Have you (for whatever reason) had the car running really rich for a while?

Not sure on age of the oxygen sensor. I suspect it's original. The car did have a few vacuum leaks for a while... could that of caused it to run rich?

Oh and no fault codes if that's what you mean by engine lights?

There is an ISCV (idle speed) control valve with a vacuum hose running from the back of the valve cover to the air intake. It's function is to regulate idle speed according to the literature I have found. I WOULD SUSPECT THE CONTROL VALVE. I am NOT an expert.

I hope he solved his problem - that post is six weeks old.

For future reference...I'd check the coolant temp and intake air temp sensors as well.  Quick & easy tests.
