hey everyone. im brandon. i have a 91 318i sedan. just checking out this site to see if there are any real people and not assholes like the majority of bf's.
with that said, im having a problem with my bim bim.
i was driving my car home from my old job and decided to stop by my new job. so, i go in to my new job and come out about 10 minutes later. i put the key in and everything works like normal with the exception of not being able to hear the fuel pump prime. i didnt really think much of it so i went to twist the key to crank her. nothing happened. radio and lights still work but ,absolutely nothing happens when you turn the key to "start" no cranking, no fuel. seeing is how everything else worked, thats why i checked the ignition switch. figured maybe it lost a contact on the inside or something( stranger things have happened).
ignition switch works fine, none of the fuses are blown and none of the relays are torched.
the only thing that makes any sense to me right now is that right before i pulled into the parking lot, my speakers started acting wierd. kind of like dimming out and coming back to normal. does the speaker harness run near any of the wiring for the fuel system, battery, anything having to do with the functional running fo the car?
lets see if anyone can help me solve this one.

yea a lot of them cna be jerks sometimes, you'll find that this place is great for help.

its sounding like an alternator, i've heard of many other cases with similar symptoms.

Welcome to M42Club.
Easy to check the pump with the battery in the trunk and the pump under the rear seat. Wire direct from the battery to the pump. Wiggle the plug on the pump also. I chased my intermittent short for a year until I bumped the plug on top of the pump and it started. I pried the prongs on the pump apart to put a little tension in the plug on the end of the wires. Now I have two extra fuel pump relays I didn't need.

why would that cause the car to not crank at all though? i have read in the chiltons that the pump will prime then the motor turns and the pump is turned on again.

Have you tried push starting? Could be the starter perhaps ?

i cant push stat it. its in a place that would make that really hard. not only that, i jumped the starter and it works fine. trust me, everything mechanical that i can think of has been tested. got to be wiring. just really looking for suggestions from people that have maybe had the same problem.

Did you rip out the back seat+insulation material yet to check the wires back there? Speackers etc run underneat there.

i pulled out the seat about 2 months ago when i got the car to run wires for my sub and amp. the car ran fine with that in there but im begining to wonder if maybe some insulation rubbed off here.

so, i checked all the wires back there and nothing looks out of the ordinary. looks like im going to have to bust ouyt the good ole dmm and start testing for some power.

Does your fuel pump relay click when you turn the key to the on position ??
You might also want to check your starter with a volt meter when you turn the key to start position to make sure you have 12 volts to the starter......
If not then work backwards from starter to diagnose problem ...If you do have voltage to the starter then your starter might be done for ..

bim bim comes home today so we'll see what the real deal is with the electricals. i think the first thing im going to do when i get it off the wrecker is try to roll start it. lets see what happens.
