I was looking for a performance upgrade over the stock muffler so I recently had a custom exhaust installed. Sound quality and durability (I wanted stainless steel, not aluminized steel) were my top priorities. I didn't want something too loud either as I am getting old and don't need the attention. I really wanted a Remus but didn't feel like shelling out that much money. I guess in the end I came close anyway.
After shopping around for a few weeks I decided on a
QTM 10 Quantum muffler from Solo Performance. Seems like not many E30 people have this. It's well-constructed and has a unique dual-path design.
My cat was rattling, so I had the exhaust shop replace it with a high-flow aftermarket cat from Carsound. They suggested cutting out the stock resonator and replacing it with a 12" louvered straight-through resonator. They ended up running new 2.25" 304ss tube from the cat to the muffler.
This combination shounded way too raspy. The 12" straight-through resonator didn't do enough and my car sounded like a Civic when I was getting on the throttle.
I ordered a Hushpower resonator (part number 12412400) to replace the 12" resonator and it made a huuuge difference in the overall rasp.

When the exhaust is cold it has a bit of a stacatto sound from 2k-3k rpms, almost like a deck of cards is being shuffled, but I'm pretty pleased with the exhaust overall. I'll try to get around to posting some clips some day...
