This project is just about done but I thought I should share it here as well.

A little background on the car
76 02..
BIG wilwood front brakes
VW rear discs
m42 swap/e30 5 speed
super 60 turbo
42lb injectors
stock motronic efi with a tuned chip

Car is running around 6-8psi or so. It sure is fun! Let me know if you all have any questions.

Yep, I have a question. Will you teach me to weld? As I sit here (slack-jawed in amazement) a long list of questions forms in my mind. You should post more details!

How'd you tune the car? TunerPro/WBO2 with an Ostrich?

Wish my Dad was still around...he'd have loved your project. He bought an '02 brand new in 1974 and started our 'family relationship' with BMW. Both my Dad and Mum always insisted the '02 was, hands down, the most fun car they'd even driven.

hehe, sure come on over to Michigan and I'll teach you to weld. It's really not alll that hard.

Yeah I tuned it with an osrich2 and tunerproRT. The tune was the hardest part. Mostly fixing a hot start issue I had.

It's a stock m42 other than the turbo setup....
My buddy just finished his up on his e12 ( I made the manifold for that)....now we have to adjust the tune. He is going for more in the 9-10psi range.

I have done a ton of m42 02 swaps...well 5 and hand my hand in 10 more around the country (I sell mounts for the swap). It keeps the car light and it still feels like an 02 except more power, efi, etc, etc

Sounds like a riddle....when is an '02 more like an '02? Does your buddy have an e21 or an e12? IMHO the e12 is a bit porky for an M42...at least ours was. My Dad bought one of those brand new too!

Very cool. My first BMW was a 1970 2002! I still miss the car and highly regret ever selling it!

How long have you been doing M42 swaps? I remember about 10 years ago everyone told me I was nuts for wanting to put an M42 in a 2002. Back then there were only vague pictures from one guys swap.

Wish I had the fabrication knowledge I do now! It would be much easier to pull off.

Keep us updated on the progress. This uses a 60trim t3/t4 journal bearing correct?

Dave: oops...yes my buddys car is an e21. I am doing an LSx swap on a e12 right now hence the reason for the mixup.

wazzu: I swapped my personal 02 about 7 years ago (wow it has really been that long).
Yes that one swap that was shown 10 years ago turned everyone off on the m42...it was because they used an e36 m42 and not the e30 stuff.

Car left to go home today.....it's been with me awhile and I'll miss her.

Your website is quite inspirational. You have a baby on the way too? Congrats. I love the fact that your wife is cool enough to drive an Amazon. I can't get my wife out of a minivan.

That e12 looks just like my e24/1 underneath (except the motor, of course). I should be doing the same things to it that you're doing.

Great build up ! Finally i can see how AFM should be installed on Motronic setups, like it was on factory made cars with Motronic/turbo/AFM

Dave: Actually the amazon might get put on the back burner as I am picking up 2 classic minis on Monday and my wife will drive one of those daily.
Baby is already here actually...he will be 5 months old in about a week.

Isn't the e24 more like the e28?

I actually had the AFM as a blow through at first and changed it to draw through to try and fix the hot start issue but the issue wasn't that at all. I do think it is better as a draw through as that is how Porsche did it and they used motronic.

Sadly, the e24 has moved on. I'm looking at an e12 though...

FYI the e24 was built in two series, matching whatever 5-series was in production at the time. Before mid-82 they were an e12 chassis, after that they switched to the e28 bits. My 633CSi was built 11/81, so it was the e12-based series 1 car; but to make it even sillier it was one of the very first Motronic cars - M1.0 Basic with the M30B32 motor. The red-headed stepchild of the whole group!

The m42 turbo 02 was waaaay fun. I have been helping my buddy tune his m42 turbo e21 recently and it is amazing how quick it is. We are going to get some better/more videos soon and I will post them over here too.
