Fuel Pump?
« on: July 07, 2012, 05:15:46 PM »
My e30 m42 keeps dying randomly.  Sometimes it will go weeks with no problem then out of nowhere I will be driving down the highway and I will have no throttle response but the car will continue to run as long as its in gear and im not pushing the clutch.  I've also noticed that the problem is really bad when the weather is hot.  The car will start right back up but will die again a couple of miles down the road.  Ive also noticed the fuel pump making alot of noise when it dies.  I replaced the fuel pressure regulator thinking that might be the problem but it didn't work.  Anyone have any ideas? thanks.

When the fuel pump died in my car,  it was random like that.   it would die, then could be brought back to life with a thump on the fuel tank.  Since being replaced,  all has been well.   It sounds like it may be the same for your car,  perhaps.  The fuel pump is hard to test when it gets sporadic like that,  but luckily it is not horribly difficult or expensive to replace.

I agree....my symptoms were the same BUT It was more of the connection that went bad up top and not the fuel pump itself. I had replaced the fuel pump with an aftermarket one thinking that was the issue and the same started happening. I needed to replace the whole in tank unit which comes with a new pump and never had an issue again.

My .02
