What is this Pipe?
« on: June 15, 2012, 10:43:11 AM »
Need help identifying a part I found loose under the car hood. I believe it is a vacuum, vent or fuel pipe for an M42 engine.

It is a black plastic pipe about 18 inches in length with 3 bends. Two are approxiamately 30-45 degrees and a third a 90 degree at different directions. The pipe is 11-12mm OD with 1mm wall. One end is expanded to approxiamately 15-16mm OD and is 16-20mm long. Inside the expanded end is a rubber sleeve with the pipe ID.

A JPG is attached and I hope I setup correctly.

No pic, but it sounds like the pipe that goes from the plastic coolant pipe on the block to the head via the aluminum U bend that goes through those funky 4 outlet vac connectors/hoses. #18 in this http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E30/2-doors/Europe/318is-M42/LHD/M/1989/september/browse/engine/cooling_system_water_hoses/ Since that's the only line that changes OD from one end to another IIRC that must be it. Either your car has had the mess under the intake done or the hose was replaced and forgotten/dropped in the snake pit.

Unknown Plastic Pipe

Apologize for no picture but I cannot get the picture file to Upload.  I have resized and changed format type but no joy.

The most of the parts shown in the link are not used in my car. The link is for an E30 and my car is an E36.

The pipe in question is hard plastic not a rubber hose.  I am sure it is not a water or fuel pipe because it is not designed to be liquid tight plus I have all water hoses identified.    I believe it is a vacuum or breather pipe.  It could be a drain pipe. The expanded end has a rubber sleeve that is the same size as the pipe opposite end.  It could be related to the Vacuum Reservoir/Tank or the Brake Vacuum system but with RealOEM, Chilton and Bentley's not showing a full set of diagrams or pictures I am at a loss.

Option For Unknown Pipe

Looking at http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=CG63&mospid=47505&btnr=16_0315&hg=16&fg=10

I believe Part #3 is a small blue colored tube/pipe.  Part #4 has a similar shape to the unknown pipe and it does fit the nipple on the filter.  I said above it may be a drain because I see no place to connect other end.

Opinions Needed.

Added Note 6-16-2012   The pipe in question has these markings: ITTAE FHS  12x1 >  P [p.. or f..]  letters in brackets   faint.

My apologies, didn't look at your other posts to see you have a 318ti. Where are the E36 people?
