used chain guides?
« on: May 01, 2012, 10:39:49 PM »
kinda need a quick opinion here.
i found an e36 m42 in the junkyard today with nice square cam sprockets and managed to pull the head and sprockets before they threw me out... the crank bolt was more than my tools can handle so i couldnt get the guides, chain, or crank sprocket. my question - the guides appeared to be a base metal that looked aluminum with the plastic attached and in good shape. is it confirmed that these are the old/original guides, and if they are then it is not worth me rushing over tomorrow to pull them?
i know this seems cheap of me, but almost 300$ in parts for 30 bucks sounds good.
thanks for thoughts - the car will be crushed tomorrow or the next day so time is short!
ps - i own an e30 m42

Yup, I'm here.  I'd use them myself if they're not de-laminating.  You might not have a good set though - IIRC I'm pretty sure the trouble with the old guides is usually wear down at the bottom of the left guide, and of course the ever-troublesome idler gear

The newer guides seem to be a worthwhile improvement though.  If I had a really nice e30 iS I'd definitely use the best parts I could find.

I would probably avoid the old style rubber-on-metal driver's side guide. Unless yours is shredded, it wouldn't be worth the effort.

If the cam sprockets are clean, grab them. At least those are easy to verify as being good!

thanks guys - and for making me feel guilty:o
i will reuse the gears, and i guess (sniff sniff) let the rest go to the crusher. It is a couple hours work and a couple hours of driving for something I may not absolutely need (havent pulled my timing covers yet) and may not actually be in better shape than mine....
if they werent so damn expensive! how can one piece of plastic with no moving parts be 120 bucks??!!

Where are you getting your parts? Try http://www.pelicanparts.com because I think they are cheaper.

Also look at http://getbmwparts.com/ (formerly known as Tischer BMW) and BMW of Atlanta as well.
