Odometer broke, what's the easiest fix?
« on: November 15, 2006, 11:44:59 PM »
The odometer broke on my 86 325e (263K) but speedo works fine. In my parts bin, I have a complete instrument cluster from my 91 318i (M42) parts car. Of course the tach will be way off by swapping instrument clusters from an eta M20 to a M42.

What's the easiest fix, swapping out the tach in my 91 instrument cluster or swapping out the speedo in the 86 instrument cluster? I guess it doesn't really make that much difference. I've never taken a E30 instrument cluster apart before, any been there, done that recommendations before I start?

You'll need to swap out the odometer gear most likely. These tend to fail most of the time when the odometer goes out.

If you have a spare working odo... you can actually turn the numbered mileage dials VERY carefully with a small screwdriver... (obviously, I hope you're rolling them forward and not back!)

the eurodepot will prolly do an exchange plus a bit of $ and they can set the odo to whatever mileage you want; Joel's a decent man.

finally, expensive but a real fix: http://odometergears.com/
