Complete M42 swap in Minnesota, $400 OBO
« on: April 19, 2012, 09:19:03 PM »
Hey all, I know im not a regular on here, but I have this m42 that I was going to put into a e21. Long story short, the car sold before I could buy it, but I already had the motor. So its all for sale now. :)

A complete M42 out of a 1993 318is. Dont know the exact milage, it was less then 200k.
When I say complete I mean:
-Long block
-Upper and lower intake
-exhaust manifold and downpipe
-valve cover
-wiring harness
-ecu
-fuel rail and injectors
-upper and lower oil pan
-air box and MAF
-flywheel
-clutch disc and pressure plate
-alternator
-motor mounts
-Plug wires and ignition coils

Basically all the hardware you need to get it running in whatever chassis you want.
Id like to get $400 for everything, but im open to offers. Shipping can be arranged.

Ive seen prices for M42's all over the board, but considering everything that comes with this I think my price is fair.

FULL DISCLOUSURE: The PO said the car was using a lot of coolant. As the car still ran I assume the profile gaskets will need to be replaced. A complete top end gasket set from blunt is $100 or thereabouts.

I already have a spare, but your price sounds good.  Do you want me to change the thread title to reflect the price?  I'd post a location as well, sometimes that helps out.  A local pickup can save substantial $$, and us M42 ppl are known for being pretty cheap...

You can try calling Metric Mechanic to see if they want any M42 cores. I am having a motor built by them now, and I think that they mentioned that they had very few spares around. You could probably get more than $400 from them for the motor (the core deposit is $1k on an M42 right now).

Visit HERE for a plethora of 318iS stuff and some other randomness.  Would you say I have a, plethora, of pinatas?

Thanks for the tip. I gave them a call and they didnt have any interest in it, the guy said they usually buy their cores for around $150 at salvage yards.

Anyways im not firm on price so feel free to make offers for the whole thing or individual parts!

I haven't done this myself, but I've heard you just have to swap the intake manifolds and disconnect the knock sensors to run the later M42 in the e30.  Depending on the particular M42 sub-model, you might also have to swap the coolant temp sensors and the serpentine belt system.
