Author Topic: Cutting out and oil leak. (Read 3002 times)

I posted a couple weeks back about how my m42 would cut out after start up until I hit higher RPM's and then it would be good.

Well after it doing that for about a week, I noticed an oil leak. Its not pouring out but I wouldn't call it a small one. The internet suggested it was the oil canister gasket.

At the same time I noticed the oil leak, the cutting out got worse. It happened over night. I got in the car to drive to school and got half way and the car started cutting out much worse. It didn't seem to matter the RPM's. I took it back home and parked it for the weekend.

I just took it for a test drive and it did fine getting out of the neighborhood under light throttle. But as soon as I got on the road with some heavier throttle it started cutting out and had no power. I turned into a parking lot to turn around. It died when I let it hit idle. I started it back and kept the revs up. Drove it back home and it did ok but was still down on power. I parked it in the drive and left it running. It seemed to idle ok.

I am wondering if the oil leak is related or just a coincidence and if anyone has any ideas on the cutting out issues.

I should have some more info on where the oil leak seems to be coming from later tonight.

did your oil pressure light come on?

Usually that o-ring fails behind the filter housing, but the paper gasket is also a likely leak. I'd suspect it's not related, they all do that.

My oil pressure light never came on.

Any ideas on the cutting out? I did recently do the mess under the intake, could that be a vacuum leak or a back ICV? I believe I have an old ICV laying around.

Did we do the coolant temp sensors? I can't recall where we were at on your case.

We figured out that the coolant temp sensor had an issue. I will repair the wire while I am working on the car this time and that should fix that.

The way I did the mess under the intake was to block off the port on the side of the block and the top of the plastic tube. I don't guess this would cause any issues as I read a lot of people saying it worked fine that way for them. I haven't noticed a coolant leak.

I did some digging around in the engine bay this morning before I left for class. The short hose going from the ICV to the intake is the only one that wasn't replaced when I did the mess under the intake so I suspected it to be the culprit if it is a vacuum leak. When I check it out, I noticed that the hose coming out of the other end of the ICV, which I have running to the intake elbow, was at a pretty harsh angle. It didn't seem to completely kinked but I could see it getting that way as vacuum is pulled.

I will sort that out and see where it gets me when I get the car back on its wheels. I am fixing some brake issues while its in the garage.

As for the oil leak, I haven't gotten around to finding it yet but the whole underside of the pan seems to be covered in a thin layer of oil.

I am not sure that this will fix my issues so I am still open to ideas if anyone comes up with any.
