2013 Update

Finally after what feels like ages, I've made some serious headway on what I call "The Project Bimmer" . Ill try and keep this as short and sweet as possible.

Recent Parts and Things:
- M Shifter + M Striped boot
- New front valiance
- Carbon Emblems
- Left & right front grilles
- Blacked out euro kidney ( Was sold as a "euro" kidney grille, personally I cant tell the difference)

- Powdercoated Valvecover
- New cam gears
- All 4 timing chain rails
- Idler Gear
- New Chain and tensioner
- Bit the bullet and bought a camshaft holding tool
- ARP head studs
- New hood guides and rollers
- Supertech Nitrile Coated lightweight 6mm valves
- Supertech High preformance spring set (Good to 12k rpm)
- Supertech titanium seats and retainers
- 12.56x6mm Valve guides
- Head cleaned, surfaced, ported, triple grooved and guides pressed
- VAC .140 MLS Gasket
- 2 front wheel hubs
- 2 rear wheel bearings with hardware kits
- Thermostat & Gasket
- 17" Racinghart Rims 17x7.5  +43 offset (Sold to me locally, Not 100% sure they're authentic Racinghart)
- Goodride SV03 205/45/R17 Summer tires
- 73.1 to 57.1 Hub Centric Rings
- Aluminum M3 rad shroud with 14" electric fan
- Smoked front signal lights
- Upper Rad support + new rubber mounts
- Flowmaster 2.25 in and out Muffler

That's the majority of it I believe. Unfortunately I live in Canada and only get about 4 months of non-freezing weather, so the project is now on the back burner as I look to replace my E34 with an AWD Subaru.

Next summer will be a big summer for the project.

Planned parts and things:
- A show quality paint job (have yet to settle on a color)
- Walbro 255lpm Fuel pump
-  3" catback, likely I will make this my self
- COP Kit
- Injectors (will decide size when I decide what kind of boost I'd like to run)
- Intercooler and Piping
- Adjustable FPR
- Garrett GT2871r Turbo
- 666 Fab Turbo Manifold
- Clear side markers
- New fender moldings
- Parking brake overhaul
- UltraRacing Front Strut Brace
- 1.5" Lowering Springs
- Camotors Cold Air Intake
- Adjustable strut mounts and camber plates
- Megasquirt and MarkD chip, or I may splurge on a true stand alone engine management.

Thats the basic rundown of the project for now, onto the pictures. Click Image for high res.

Tearing the head down (on the the kitchen table  :P shhhhhh)

Back From the machinist

First test fire, Success!!

Brought the new rims home

Cleaned the engine bay, engine purring like a kitten.

If anyone's interested months ago I started a Website that I intend to fill with BMW info, but like most of my web project they get put on back burners for long periods of time. Though I did actually document 2 small and easy procedures my self.

Removing M42 Valve Springs/ Valves = http://gablabs.org/bimmerwissen/m/index.php?id=13
Fuel Rail Disassemble = http://gablabs.org/bimmerwissen/m/index.php?id=14
Edit: after testing these links, they seem to only work with firefox, else you just end up on the homepage. I'm using a very finicky CMS at the moment.

For those interested "BimmerWissen" is roughly translated as BMW Knowledge, Bimmer obviously a pet name for BMW.

Cheers
- Adam

Unfortunately Its progress has been at a dead halt for almost a year now, but I still find myself sitting in it and opening the hood for no reason, other then my love for this car. My E34 is the opposite, With all its problems as of late, even though its a beautiful car, I just dread getting in it now. I guess because my 318iS Never let me down, replaced the alternator once, but other then that is was the definition of reliable. My damn E34 seems to have a new problem every month.

I long for the day when my M42 is finally finished. One day.... Stay tune......... :D

I retract my moaning about my E34!!
I fixed it today. I no longer dread getting in it. After nearly 2 months without radio, windows, wipers, blower etc etc, I now get exciting just jumping into the fully functioning cockpit of the E34. Still its lack luster in comparison to the Ol M42, but Its a nice cruising vehicle.

Definitely don't sell it.  You won't be able to find another one at a reasonable price.  I know how you feel...having a few BMWs myself I just seem to prefer the 318i all the time.  Best car they've ever built, IMHO.

How'd you end up fixing the old e34 battlewagon?

BTW, you should be able to find that rad support on all facelift e30's.  I'm pretty sure I have one around somewhere if you need it.  It was from a '90 325i I parted a while back.
'08 Karmesinrot 128i 6MT
'86 Zinnoberrot 635CSi (M30B32/G265/3.46 torsen LSD)

Sold: '97 Montrealblau 318iS, '91 Brilliantrot 318i, '91 Brilliantrot 318iS

I've actually got the E34 up on Kijiji as a "For Trade", Its more or less just a feeler, see what might come my way.

Though I agree Dave, In my city its tough to find a BMW period, let alone a E30 or E34. Lots of Very badly beaten up early 80's BMW's but can never find anything worth buying.

Today though I came across a couple decent e36 m50's for $2000-$3000, also a 91 318i, though It was an M40, If I buy a 4 banger BMW Its going to have to be an M42 or S42, I have a better chance of being struck by lighting then getting my hands on an S42 though :D.

I've yet to come across any E30's in the Junk yards around here, and have actually only viewed 2 facelift e30's for sale in this city in that time frame. Seems as though only a handful of E30's in this city. If you could find that top support rail, that would be great, I don't even think anyone makes that part anymore.

Went out and took a couple shots of the E34 today. Man does that car sound great with the windows open, I don't know what exhaust is on there but it sounds beautiful. You can hear that its a quality motor at the other end of the catback, unlike kids and they're honda's. If that makes sense. Note to self. Ill have to upload a sound clip or video.

That pissed me off, big diesel truck through a rock at my fog light recently.

Radio and clock have some LCD bleeds, you can still see what radio channel your on.

Its not in Immaculate condition, but its not to shabby either for 22 years old.

Oh and look at that, my camera had 2 pictures of my 318 in ill repair. I moved over the winter so I don't have my space to work on it anymore either. Might get a nice shed, so i can setup my vices and grinders and what not, things to clean parts and what have you.

Good day my fellow high revving M42 fanatics. As is goes every year, the long Canadian winter has passed and so I've come out of hibernation to fire up my m42.

Really happy to see we're still using my logo design on the site. Makes me feel right at home  ;D

Anyway onward, I haven't really made any tremendous headway this year as I've been quite busy. Though I've had a chance to start experimenting with 3M Vinyl products, while I think the cost and look of the material is great, naturally, I still want paint.

Considering this was my first time applying any vinyl, I think it turned out well but still not flawless. Look past the fact that nothing is aligned and bolted down in these pictures.

In my last updated, I was preparing to buy an AWD Subaru. That changed, got an outrageous deal on a 2005 Dodge Ram QC 5.7 Hemi.

I went out on a limb with this truck, bought in with these conditions clearly outlined: Running very bad, stalls while driving, fuel mileage 35L / 100km (6.5 mpg), 4wd does not engage. Luck would have it, after changing plugs (2 per cyl  >:( ), wires and downstream Oxygen sensors, the truck runs like its brand new. 4WD actually did engage, but nearly useless with stripped front spline shafts.

Back to the 318iS, still running a mls gasket and 8.5:1 compression. If all goes well, ms, injectors, walbro pump, cop kit and garrett 2871r will be purchased this summer and *fingers crossed* I will have my turbo M42 complete, under the hood anyway.

In closing, I also have some sad news, lacking sufficient space I was forced to give up my 525i. Likely the most reliable car I've ever owned, it was its time anyway. I decided after years of fun packed service, I couldn't put a price on this car, and donated it to a local charity. The car was my winter warrior in the harsh Canadian winters, the Dodge has large feet to fill.

Anyway, If you managed to make it through my post, kudo's and thanks for reading  :P

See you guys around the forums.
