Alternator pulley removal
« on: March 23, 2012, 05:07:10 AM »
Ok, so i,m wanting to replace my stock alternator pulley with a VAC Motorsports Underdrive pulley set. I have the 24mm deep well socket to remove the bolt, but have no idea how to stop the pulley itself from moving when trying to loosen the bolt. Should i be using an impact wrench, or is there an easier way to loosen the bolt with a standard rachet???

Cheers,

Jester

Probably an impact gun, along with a spare belt wrapped around the pulley and tightened with a set of vise-grip pliers.

How exactly do i secure the belt to the pulley? I tried with a spare belt, but the pulley still moved. Should i secure the alternator back in the engine bay so i have a bit more leverage?

Can you put the body of the alternator in a vise on the bench, and then use the spare belt around the pulley? Have a buddy clamp down hard on the belt and it should remain in place enough for you to hit the nut with the impact gun.

what I have done in the past,  use an old belt, go around the pulley with it and then pinch it tight at the bottom,  with a bench vice..sometimes you have to turn the alternator a couple of times, twisting the belt until it is really tight.    then support the body of the alternator with one hand and zap the nut off with an impact driver.  its probly easier if you can find a helper, but I have gotten it done myself using this method.

If it's on the engine, this is the easiest way.  I use a pair of vice-grips on the outer flange of the alternator pulley and a big ratchet wrench or breaker bar on the nut.  It usually destroys the pulley, but then I don't need an impact wrench.  The vice-grips wedged against a board, plank or stout part of the motor (P/S pump maybe) will pop that sucker right off.

don't have a bench or a vice grip. basically just trying to do it by hand. i can get my hands on an impact wrench, then i'll be half way there. my only concern is keeping the pulley still as i remove the bolt

the alternator is back on the car now for obvious reasons. so thinking the vice-grip pliers and socket wrench might have to do the trick

Ok...so i tried this way with the vice-grips on the pulley and the 24mm socket and ratchet. Even with the belt on the pulley and the vice-grips directly around the pulley and belt, the vice-grip pliers can't get enough of a hold to stop the pulley from rotating. The pliers even come off the pulley nearly every time. Is there a special way to tighten the pliers before loosening the bolt??

last bit is to drill two holes on the pulley and screw it to something solid. bring in the breaker bar and loose that whore up.
