Dinan chip with COPs, issue?
« on: March 04, 2012, 08:51:05 PM »
So i bought a 318i, guy installed COPs and put in a Dinan chip. Car seems to drive fine, havent really driven it much at all, have to wait till april to get my DMV stuff sorted.

My friend who's a mechanic, general gear head, prompted a discussion about COPs interfering with the a modified chip/ecu. says it might have to get tuned or he thinks it might not be congruent.

Chipped guys, what is your experience with chipping and COPping an M42?

Side discussion. My previous 318is, i put in a mark d chip and loved it. Don't have much experience with Dinan chips at all. Thinking of selling it and getting a mark d into this 318i. What do people thing about these 2?

Dinan chip with COPs, issue?

The COPs don't really have anything to do with the chip.  The DME coil drivers (four big MOSFET transistors inside the DME case) are what needs to be right.  If the coil drivers get too little resistance or too much, they'll burn up.

The COP coils on Rob's setup are basically the same coil in a different case.

I have no idea about the differing chips though.  I've heard good things about Dinan, great things about Mark D'Sylva.  I've often considered a new chip but just keep putting it off.

I run the exact set-up (dinan chip, cop) that you are talking about.  I have had no issues at all, and it has been about 9 months and maybe 1,500 miles since the cop was installed.  There seems to be no difference at all in reliability.  Hope this helps!
