BTW, that steel bracket with the hole in it between the cam cover breather hose and the top of the oil filter is an engine hoist point. Try hooking up there for easy engine removal.

This is not my first "rodeo" sir, just my first turbo mod... I am aware of all the book rules... call me a violator if you wish, but sometimes its okay to bend the rules. I only did what's seen because I had to.
*****note: I am not the first owner, had this baby since Christmas 2011. The engine pulled had 240,000k but still functional with minor usual tick tack sounds. It did have a bad timing cover profile gasket... slow leakin'

Not sure where your rodeo comment came from... I was not commenting on your ability to build, but assumed that you must have missed that as a pick up point based on how you wrapped the cable around the engine in one case and bolted something else on in the other. Seems like a lot more work that could damage the valve cover, intake manifold, etc.

I've done this more than the average number of times, and was just offering a suggestion. Good luck with the build.

Rob, I apologize... Sorry. It felt like you were speaking down to me like I was a complete noob... So I did get a little defensive instinctively. I appreciate all your help, as well as others!!! Thank you for trying to steer me the right direction. I will come clean up front, I have never rebuilt an engine other than small engines(lawn mower types). I have never turbo charge modded either, as stated. I have seen all other aspects except custom tuning--not chipping or using a pre-programmed hand-held(did those on other kinds of vehicles).

Update: I have been given today as a father/son day... My dad is a dairy serviceman, handling vacuum pumps,electrical, plumbing, and a lot of stainless steel welding,etc... He knows this car is my keeper--->finally. lol! I asked for his help, and he's coming out today to modify the turbo header so it will fit the M42B18(extend it on all four paths about one inch). Also, he's bringing three inch stainless for the complete exhaust... Pictures will come later or maybe tomorrow. We plan on using every hour available today.

I am aiming for the short term, only 4-6 psi until I can get the A/F ratio correct for higher boost(whatever a 93' BMW's M42B18 can handle). I could use all helpful knowledge available there.

Woke up out of sleep with a uneasy feeling... got pics of the completed 3 inch exhaust, but back to the engine swap, I need help from someone here who hopefully will bless me with the info. Is it okay to unbolt the turbo and clock it down on its own exhaust flange??? Never turbo charged or taken one apart, just know its bearings, and fan like blades dealing with forced induction properties...
The m42b18 I was swapping is from a 93' BMW 318, and mine is a 1991... I already switched the intakes, but have to switch the oil pans as well due to clearance issues with the cross member. The dip stick on my original is located up front and the 93's is on the side along with oil pan design having the drain plug area moved as well... Is this possible, or am I attempting something that is not as easy as swapping these things???

Yes you can clock the turbo. You'll need a new oil pan and pickup. Not sure about the dipstick and tube.

I have the oil pan from the original m42b18 that I pulled, do you think it may work on the 2 year newer engine?

Big thanks to all that have, and will still help me on this journey...To my friend KC, I appreciate the schoolin' when I asked about compression ratio!!! The fact of a compression ratio 10:1, high boost will definitely not be available until I can get further along with my experience rebuilding. Dome pistons are one way, along with strength increased through forged parts... still learning and planning, talk about long term and high cost.:eek: Still looking to follow through with stock engine setup and keep low boost until back up engine is built.

Well either y'all don't know, or you have knowledge and don't wanna' share... lol! Its okay, that is a great way for me to stop posting here, because if theres no love, I'd rather be elsewhere. I believe regardless, a functional BOV,WG, and that awsome Tru Boost controller I got---->she'll be fine and fun with 4-6psi. For a new member here, I figured there would be a bit more response considering we all love the same kind of car... At least I had someone try to help on the (unrequested and known) correct way to pull an engine.
