Temperature Gauge Not Working '91 318i
« on: February 11, 2012, 08:07:20 PM »
Hey guys I recently purchased a '91 318i with a blown headgasket. I am attempting to bring it back to life. Body is in almost perfect shape just needs foglights, front lip, and the clear coat is peeling on the hood. I have pulled and reinstalled the head with a new headgasket and she runs like a beauty now. The only thing I can't figure out is the Temperature gauge. It used to jump (to hot and right back down to cold) when the key made contact and now its not doing anything. I have replaced the temperature coolant sensor and no response. I have also pulled the gauge cluster and checked both of the batteries . They both were showing 3 volts with the volt-meter. Any recommendations or suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks for the help,
AJ

Here are a few pictures of the car and some pictures of the "sludge."

Looks like you've really done a lot of work to that car!  Nice to see a 318 'vert too, they're not very common.

I'm sure you checked, but it can be that little mounting nut on the back of the gauge cluster.  If that loosens up the gauge pins won't make good contact with the cluster's power board.  Or corrosion doing the same thing internally.

I'd also run a continuity test on the sensor wire.  Should be a single brown/violet running from the sensor to gauge connector C1 pin 26 (that's the blue plug).
