In my opinion no, since it is paper it will not cause a problem but there will be some that may say otherwise.

What are the possible outcomes... damage to the oil pump etc?

If it's in the timing chain area, then it can't get to the oil pump. The timing chain covers seal up that area in front. That area doesn't connect directly to the sump, and there is no direct access to the oil pump or pick up ...

All I can see happening is it will get chewed to bits by the chain and sprockets.

I know chain pieces get into the lower oil pan (I found some) so it must have a way to make it there. Paper is bigger but still... where would it go?

Chain pieces in the sump? Wow.

I guess I wasn't quite accurate. Nothing can get into the sump from the bottom of the timing case ...

The chain had to get into the valve train area of the cylinder head through that upper chain guide. I can't imagine how else it would get out of the timing case.
