The M42 isn't perfect.  It's just a really nice compromise between chassis and motor, IMHO.  A few of the Japanese motors are really nice, very tempting.  I ran Nissans for a long time, the VG30DETT and SR20DET are superb.  Honda & Toyota make awesome motors too.  If only they could build something with the "feel" of the small BMWs, or the Italians...but they never do.

Speaking of swaps, a buddy of mine (BMW Master Tech) is thinking about dropping an M30 in his e30 325is.  I warned him about the weight, but he's all about the torque.  With all that forward weight it'll make his e30 even tail happier than  it is now...definitely not my thing.  To be fair he thinks the M42 is a toy...to each his own (he's more right than wrong, anyway).

Speaking of M30's, I just got myself a 633CSi project and I'm looking  forward to torque!  Of course 16mpg isn't ideal, but sharks are a  different kind of compromise.

The best part of the e30 M42 to me is the delightfully light front end.  Best balanced BMW ever made, maybe after the '02 and slightly before the e30 M3.  I like the e36 as well, but it's a bit more money and slightly too refined for me.  I'm sure I'll end up with one sooner or later.

yea i agree with you dave, theres some jap motors out there that are good and the sr20 is one of them and so the 2jz from toyota, as for Hondas im done with them, did so much with them before my BMW and no matter how you do them they all end up sounding like annoying flies or vacuums and by the end of the day its still a honda... with nissan at least you get some respect and power from those 4 bangers and sound like a beast if done right ... i think my most fav jap motor would have to be the mazda Rx motors... their rotorary power can handle alot and the sound incredible... i had a 04' RX-8 turbo and it was like heaven on wheels until some drunk driver hit me and total my car only had it for less than a yr too so hated that guy who hit me cause he also didnt stop and just took off... yes our M42 may be considered "toys" but im happy with that because i spent the extra money to make other drivers think twice before they pull up next to me... plus we dont HAVE to swap motor for more power and loos the weight ratio we'll just add a good turbo and we are good... you see those type of builds on this forum more than on any other forum

I used to be really active on e30tech because their forced induction section is pretty darn good and there is a lot of information over there. To me, though, the dynamics of r3v are just more enjoyable.

As to saying that people on r3v are jerks because they tell you they don't like something you've done to your car, I guess I don't get it. Everyone has an opinion on what looks the best, and the majority of people, myself included, don't think the ebay parts look good. That's just the way it is, and some people express that differently than others. It's your car though, so in the end, why are you taking it so personally. Do what you think looks good.

I have been very happy with M42Club since Sheepdog & I started it. I originally made the "club" in a thread on Bimmerfourms' E30 section. Some E36 guys had started one in a similar fashion, but had said "no E30 owners allowed." So, I made the E30 thread to spite them, it attracted a lot more attention than I expected, and then Sheepdog offered to host the club on his servers. The rest, as they say, is history.

All along, I have been very happy with the maturity & respect shown in most posts. There have been a few flaming incidents, but most of them seem to be at least a few years ago. Generally, it seems that E30 M42 owners are a little older than the average E30 owner (except E30 M3 owners...given the cost & rarity of that car, you sort of need solid employment to own one). I think that the relative rarity of the 318iS, the fact that it is less powerful / "slower" on paper and it having 4 cylinders keeps a lot of the much younger guys away. Actually, now that the E36 has sort of become the Honda Civic of BMWs, it seems that most of the younger guys gravitate toward those these days.

E30tech has some good information on it. I guess it is good that I registered there in 2003 when it was still being actively maintained...although I have managed a whopping 11 posts since then lol. R3v also has a lot of really good, knowledgeable people on it. While they don't have as much M42 specific stuff, there is a plethora of generic E30 information available there (headlight upgrades, steering rack swaps, engine swaps, etc). The M42 used to get a LOT of disrespect all over the place. While some people still look down on it, the overall sentiment toward it has improved a lot in the last 5 years. In general, I would say that it is a well-regarded motor in the E30 community. There are so few of them, compared to M20 cars, that most E30 people never get to drive one & make comments based on assumptions.

Visit HERE for a plethora of 318iS stuff and some other randomness.  Would you say I have a, plethora, of pinatas?

i went to my first BMW meet that one of the guys hosted on R3V this past Saturday and this guy in a E36 M3 has found new respect towards the M42 as when i saw my car he was intrigued of how it looked and how it sound when i took it for a test drive as i did his he said that he the power it put out and was surprised that it pushed him back in his seat as he has heard that these motors dont put out alot of horsepower... i told him yes and no cause not alot of ppl will dish the money out for a MM motor as i have most would just go turbo or swap... i wanted to keep a N/A M42 and i have sometime a few have as well

I 2nd the appreciation for the maturity of this forum, being as young as I am, 23, I dont hesitate to come to m42club and ask Dave what Ive ruined on my car through trial and error :) Though I definitely hesitate to post on other forums. Not to say other forums wont provide me with help, though sometimes the criticism is less then constructive.

As for M42 being "Slower", on paper, Yes. On pavement, not as slow as one would think. Albeit you wont see me breaking any land speed records in my Stock M42, but I've always stood by the M42 for its lighter weight and balance in the e30 chasis.

Have larger engine swaps crossed my mind, of course, though I enjoy how Nimble E30 M42 combination is.

Anyway thats just my 2 cents from the "younger generation"
