Misfiring and wont idle
« on: December 14, 2011, 05:43:48 PM »
Well the other day my e30 decided that it didn't like the cold and wont idle. That issue progressed and now has a serious misfire below 1500 rpm. I pulled the plugs today and all of them were completely black, I cleaned them off with a wire brush and put them back in and still have an issue. I ran into a similar issue about a month ago with it not idling properly and I replaced the icv, intake gaskets and did the fuel injectors while I was in there and the issue went away. Any ideas? I ran out of brain power last week studying for exams and probably wont get a recharge till exams are over on Friday.

Maybe the crankshaft position sensor?  You need to use OEM if bad, many have had problems with less than OEM parts, even from reputable suppliers.  Also, don't just throw a new part at it as it's pretty spendy.  Maybe borrow a known good one or used part & ohm test.  May also be a weak ground under the hood or ECU.  Check your work for vacuum leaks or loose/cracked/misconnected vac lines.

I threw the new parts in because I have had them for a while and had never gotten around to putting them in, I am also aware of the cam and crank sensors and for the life of me cannot remember the pins to check or the acceptable resistance. The all of the grounds are fine, and there are no vacuum leaks, it is running rich, if there were a vacuum leak it would run lean. Through my process of elimination I have ruled out anything fuel or air related, it is an ignition issue which could be an issue with the cam and crank sensors. I have checked the injectors to make sure they are firing and have swapped the afm, iac, and tps from my other working 318is.
