Temp Guage out after Blower Removal
« on: November 08, 2011, 08:10:40 PM »
Now Im not talking about my 318is, shes put away for the winter, I ran into an odd issue today working on the 525i E34. The blower motor had kicked the bucket months ago, so today I started to dig it up to start diagnosing the issue.

Following safe procedures I disconnect the battery before working. I dismantled the front fire wall area to get to the blower and in the process had to remove 1 coolant hose from what I believe to be a Heater Core Valve. All went well I figured out the blower was not the culprit.

Now the problem, I put everything back together, and it fired up just fine. Though the idle stuck itself at 2000 RPM, I figured since it is an 89, its likely the computer has to remap its self because of power disconnect. So I take it for a cruise around the block, Idle still quite high even when clutching. As I pull into the driveway, shut my light off, rip the ebrake, all the while listening to 2000rpm idle and then all the sudden it calmed back down to 1000 give or take which is normal for my car.

An hour and a half later, I take it for another cruise, the idle much smoother and idling around 1000, everything seems relatively normal. Though what caught my eye was the Temp gauge was sitting at mid (Normal  operating temp), though I had only been driving for maybe 2 min in 25F weather, the engine def was not warm like it claimed. So Now I wonder if maybe I let air gaps into coolant hose I removed and now it needs  a bleed? Though I cant see it causing a temperature misread like that, though I'm sure stranger things have happened.

Any thoughts Dave? I figure you'll prob get here first =D

Funny that you'd ask.  I'm thinking it's the capacitors on the cluster.  They're famous for failing.  Are you handy with a soldering gun?  I have a bunch left over if you'd like a couple.
