m42 engine vibration

hope you can see that vid, but you can only just hear the noise im going to describe

engine history is that it was a good one, then it started knocking, and now i think it was due to the wrong oil being in it. So, i put shells etc in it and it started with that whining noise you can hear very loud in that vid. Anyway it hasnt got any worse, but today i started it up and started to rev it and i heard the rattle, sounds like from the head, but not sure exactly.

WHen its making the rattling noise which is about 5k, the engine is vibrating like mad so much so that holding the throttle open hurts my finger, but at all other revs it seems ok.




Could this be a cam bearing or something like that?

but from your description,  I have to think your problem is related to the timing chain.  either bad/broken guide rails, a failed tensioner, or something like that.  What exactly was wrong about the oil you used?  as long as it was oil and not water it should not have had an immediate and disastrous effect.

Geoff, i took the front cover off it to day and all looks good. There is no signs of anything bad at a ll. So im totally stumped.





A little info on the car and engine btw.



this is my road rally compact with m42 engine. I bought this motor and did one rally with it, and it started knocking lightly so i took it out and did a bit to it. Renewed shells, mains, had the crank checked, water pump, oil pump, head off and all new gaskets. When i came to buy oil for it i was told to use fully synthetic 10-40 and i had used semi 10-40 which was  a very cheep oil. i planned to do the rally then change it.

Anyway, when i put the motor back together, it made a whining noice that hasnt got any worse but it has done 2 rallys now. Then the other day it was running on 3 [ it gets moved in and out of my mates garage aevery day ] so i walmed it up and gave it a bit of a rev and that is when i noticved this rattle


If you hold the revs at about 5k the engine shakes so badly that i can only just keep mty hand on it as of the shaking hurts! I dont think this was there when i built the motor, so i dont know what to think now.

any ideas please?

video does not really show the problem too well..I dont know what the problem may be,  but in my past experience, a race motor that starts out fine and then starts making a knocking sound after an event, is probably not going to be the longest lasting race motor you ever had..

That was part of my worry LOL! its running really well, too well!


A mate came to have a look at it, he builds engines, and he said its probably me worring about something that isnt there, he can hear the noise but said it probably did it before!

Oh well!
