What is the cheapest route for getting a enw set of keys. The plastic part of my key is busted and is hard to turn the key without just twisted the key apart. Should I order a black set from ebay and then get them cut? Where do I get them cut?

If the metal part it so, a locksmith can do it if they carry the correct blanks. That would be the cheapest.

So if I ordered blanks they should be able to cut them ok? Could I take them to Walmart?

Yes, but not sure about walmart. Some places have to use there blanks to guarantee it. If they do it and dont guarantee it then you might still be ok.

I'd go to a locksmith. They usually know their stuff. Google them & check if they have any reviews. If you can't find one locally, maybe an Ace Hardware? I've had good luck with them.

I would have suggested Sears about ten years ago, but it seems that they've eliminated most of their experienced employees over the last few years.

i would just go to the dealership and get the key code and just get a set of fresh cut keys cut out as old ones may be worn out

Code cut keys from the dealership run about $40 now.

Thanks. Is that for 1 key or is that a pair? I guess I could buy one new one and keep my crappy one for a spare.

That's just for one key. You need to take in a copy of your registration and a photo ID and then it takes about a week.

a buddy of mine requested a key from the dealer, which they said was gonna be coming from the motherland. After a month or so, he got a measly valet key looking thing. but it actually works on all locks.

not really just go to the dealership with your registration and photo ID then ask for a key code to your ignition... they will give a number code then go to any locks smith hand them the code and boom you get fresh cut keys..the guy that helped me even recommended me a locks smith that he said bmw sends codes to get keys cut..... thats what i did and i paid 10 bucks for fresh keys that same day ... mines were more since my blanks were part of a switchblade style key fob that i purchased

Any recommendations on sites to order some decent blanks from? Just want the regular key with plastic at base. Don't want switchblade style. Would an E46 blank work in the E30? I don't see why not.

but anyways best chance is to go to a good local locksmith and have them cut you a set of keys
