does the 92 E36 have a different stomp test
« on: October 14, 2011, 12:29:03 AM »
I've tried on a few occasions to get the stomp test to work and have never had luck.  Watched the youtubes and know that I am doing it about right.  Tried lots of variations - start stomping as soon as the key is turned, a little after, pump steady, pump really fast, 5 and let go, hold on 5, 5 and then hold on 6, all to no avail.  Is the 92 different or will I just get it someday?

I don't know specifically about E36s, but sometimes your throttle cable or pedal may be adjusted incorrectly and even when you are at the bottom of the pedal travel the throttle body is not at WOT.  So the solution I have found is to key up the car and operate the throttle body manually from the engine bay.

you, sir, are a dang genius.  Thanks for the help!  Now I need to add "figure out how to make WOT actually be WOT" to the list of to dos for the car.

Glad to help.

With or a piece of wood/brick/helper have the throttle pedal put full down, remove the intake boot to the TB and look for the butterfly valves to be fully open.  If the throttle valves do not look fully open try adjusting the cable and/or the throttle pedal stop.  If those look right it's probably a TPS issue.  I am sure there is a thread on how to electronically test it's functionality on here or another BMW forum.
