Let's talk about cams...
« on: November 01, 2006, 12:03:28 PM »
I have a set of cams from Delta camshaft in my car right now and they did give more power, but I still dont think they are optimal.  The Cam doctor spec sheet they sent me shows more lift and duration on the exhaust cam than the intake.  Seems like it should be the opposite comparing to other aftermarket cams.

There is a guy in SLC who has a CNC cam grinder who is equipped to do custom grinds.  Help me decide what to get!

Here's a list I compiled, however, the internet isnt always 100% reliable so some of the numbers might be off.

intake/exh
M42 stock
252/252
10.2/10.2
M50B25 (325i) stock
228/228
9/9
S50B30 (1995 M3) stock
252/240
10.2/9.7
S52B32 (96-98 M3) stock
252/244
10.2/10.2
Schrick for M50B25 Non-vanos
256/256
10.4/10.4
schrick for S50
264/256
11.2/11.2
Schrick for M42
256/256
10.4/10.4
BMP design for M42
262/262
10.2/10.2
Cat Cams for M42
259/259
10.4/10.4

I'm thinking of getting them ground close to the schrick S50/2 spec
but with a little more duration on the exhaust.  Something like 264/260 11.2mm of lift.

What does everyone think?  it is a 2.0 so the torque loss should be as noticeable and I really like winding it out.

Input please.

You have a 2.0L M42? If you have a bit more torque, I would go for a higher duration cam and bump the power up top. Anything over 260/260 should be great.

how did you get the 2.0L out of the M42 and what are your numbers?

I think you need Dbilas cams. A friend of mine had Dbilas-cams (266/262) and individual throttle-bodies installed in his M40 and it really flies from 4500. Including chip it gave him well over 30 bhp.
