hey all...

ok, so i've started to notice that my clutch is slipping...fair enough, it is 16 years old after all...so started looking around for a new one...something with a little more give perhaps? that can handle the torque that will ultimately be coming out of my M42...

first off, if you havn't heard of Schmiedmann yet, then your in for a treat. They are a company in Denmark that deals in both OEM and aftermarket products for your BMW no matter wat model. Personally, i love their website...so much better than buying from fleabay and not knowing whether the parts will fit half the time.

Anyways, i found this kit on their website. it is for a UUC Lightened Flywheel and M5 OEM Complete Clutch kit.

my first question was why don't they make these for the M42!!!? but with a little more searching, i found that the lightweight flywheel they have for the M42 requires an OEM M3 clutch...this got me thinking. the M3 clutch and the M5 clutch are exactly the same diameter...so why wouldn't that kit fit the M42?

my main concern is that the flywheel will be too light for the M42...is 8.5lbs too light?

M5 use 9 flywheel bolts, will not fit.

I am planning to order a M42 flywheel soon from TTVracing.com in the UK. The price landed in Aus is reasonable and it is steel, rather than aluminium which I think is a bonus. This is a pic of their M20 flywheel which weighs 4.9kg:

I'll go for a 215mm clutch and use a SAAB Sach clutch on the advice of Jim Berry (Race Clutches) in Brisbane. Being NA the smaller clutch will be fine. I understand TTV can drill to suit whatever clutch size you want.

I have no idea whether the UCC flywheel is too light for a M42. You could try emailing UUC direct and asking them.

If you google TTV racing in the UK, they seem to have a good reputation.

If you go to UUCs website there is a lot of info. The M5 clutch and pressure plate is used over the M3 because its a sprung clutch where as the M3 is solid. Also UUC says the flywheel is so light because the M5 pressure plate is so heavy. This way it balances out to what weight one would think is adequate. also the flywheel is specifically made for the M5 clutch and pressure plate, you cannot use a regular e36 setup!

Supposedly the m50 based flywheels are direct bolt in. I havent tried it myself though as I had a 13lb M20 flywheel laying around.

Forced induction e36s seem to like the F1racing flywheel and clutch kits.

ok...so i've read the info from UUC about their lightweight flywheel with M5 clutch kit...it mentions that it will fit all E36 6-cyl models...my main question is...if a flywheel and clutch can be taken from an M50 engine and applied to an M42 engine, how come this kit can't b applied to the M42??

Supposedly it can. Before buying a new flywheel though, maybe get a used one and compare to the M42 one.

No one really markets parts to M42 so they dont advertise it.

ok...so essentially this kit is a bust and won't fit on the M42...

So here is my second option. bit more expensive, but i would like your opinions to know if it is actually worth the extra cost.

Fidanza Lightened Flywheel...

Total inclusive cost (Flywheel + Clutch + freight) = USD$1409.75 (AUD$1453.35)

Is this worth the money? what benifits would i get from using this flywheel with an M3 clutch??

The 3rd and final option would be to purchase the Lightened Flywheel +228mm clutch assembly from MetricMechanic...however, they're not responding to my emails about freight...so not sure how much it would cost or whether it can be shipped to Australia...

any thoughts and input would be very much appreciated...need to replace the clutch anyway...so thought i would do the flywheel at the same time

Look on jbracing.com they have a full kit for the M42, lightweight flywheel, dual disc powerhaus clutch, bolts spacers etc!! for 1771 to 1889 for the 5.5 in clutch. There stuff is the cats ass as far as whizzbang goes!!

Why not use an M20 flywheel and pay someone a few bucks to swap the ring gear? My machine shop quoted me $75usd to do this. Its not hard at all.

A lightweight flywheel is really nice on these motors, but I wouldn't break the bank for one. If you got the M40 without A/C then just use the single mass unit (and clutch) from that.

I had my m20 flywheel shaved down to 13lbs.... (feels great on the m42:D)
Costed nearly $300 IIRC, including purchase of m20 flywheel. Im also using an m20 starter FYI

Check these guys out! I talked to them last week. Real nice guy. 550 bucks for a lightened M20 flywheel, M42 ring gear, M20 clutch, bolts everything!

The m20 flywheel is your best bang for the buck out there. Period.

If you lighten it, it's more $$$ but I wouldn't go below 11-12 lbs. dude8383 posted a while back that he has no gear rattle with an 11+ lb 323i flywheel.

I'm not sure as to how much the price difference is between 215mm and 228mm but if your m42 puts out a lot more than factory numbers, 228mm would be the way to go.
