Vac issues
« on: September 09, 2011, 08:39:06 AM »
OK, it's been a while since I posted, but that's kinda good.  After my 1991 318iVert's diff ate itself, I finally was able to get it replaced and get her up and running.  She's been my daily driver since, with little to no headaches.  She's always been a little rough at idle, especially at startup, but it would clear up once I was running and was never that big of a deal.

Until Tuesday.  That's when she started feeling off.  Idle was REAL rough, tach was up and down, exhaust smelled very strong, and she in general felt like crud.  I brought her home, did a little stomp test, and got 1222.  After looking that up, I realized it means almost anything could be wrong.  Most folks online who'd had this code seemed to trace it back to vac issues, so I started poking around.

Picture 1 is just a simple wasted hose.  Easy to replace.
Picture 2 is a weird hose assembly running from underneath the intake boot to underneath the intake manifold.  I noticed it was covered in nastyness and rubbed some away.  You can see the hoseclamp that got exposed when I did.
Picture 3 is that same hose assembly at one of its junctions.  It's wasted and I was able to pull it off with almost no effort.
Picture 4 just shows all of that crap in context with the intake boot out of the way.
Picture 5 is just a clearer picture of the same hose assembly in situ.

So heres my question:  What the heck is that thing called?  Its has a metal pipe coming in from a hose assembly I believe to be associated with my idle control, air from the intake boot, the branch where the damage was the worst, and a metal pipe coming out the end underneath the manifold.  Seriously, what is this thing?  Can it be removed without screwing around with those metal pipes?  If I find the replacement, should I just cut the existing one off?  Any advice?

I've been trying to find it on realoem.com (http://realoem.com/bmw/select.do?vin=ej10712) but I haven't been able to identify it at all.  Thanks for your help gentlemen!

Did you consider deleting all those hoses?  Sounds like you're ready for the famous hose delete mod.  Read through this thread if you haven't already considered it:

I'm seriously considering it.  I just need to decide if I'm ready for it.  I've never worked on a car myself before, so i'm trying to take baby steps.  Of course, the diff was something of a baptism by fire!  last night my wife was trying to convince me to take it to a shop.  when I said "no" she asked if I knew what I was doing.  my answer?  "No, but if I always waited until I knew how to do something before I did it, I'd be an unemployed virgin.  Sometimes you just need to dive in and fake it."

Also, in the link you reference, it shows the part I'm looking for.  it is the weird hose assembly on the right he is removing from his engine.  What's it called?

babbel ... if it is any consolation I was in the same boat and just completed the mess under the intake.  Once you understand what's going on under there it is a fairly simply (but time consuming) process.  There are lots of really knowledgeable folks on this board who can help you if you get stuck.  Where are you located by the way?

I'm in Florida.  I'm probably going to have to go in whole hog.  I'll probably try to clean the whole mess, but it will take some time to figure out what I need.  Meantime, it's my daily driver and I need to get her back on the road.  Any idea what it is called?

Here's what I would suggest ... if you don't have the E36 bentley that covers the M42 engine AND the E30 Bentley books search for those links on the board.  Second read the entire thread for the "mess under the intake".  Once you have a good handle on that you could probably do what you need to do in a weekend.  Note, if this has never been done on your car you need to make sure that you get the parts listed in the mess under intake thread.  When I did mine I used OEM hoses + silicone hoses, new 4 pintle injectors, new gaskets, etc ... a couple hundred bucks in parts.  You may want to use only what others have suggested which is fairly cheap auto parts store hose etc ...

My guess is what you are looking for is the throttle body heater lines ... found on realoem here:  http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BA73&mospid=47325&btnr=11_1272&hg=11&fg=35

I can't see your pics so I cannot be sure.

A great M42 build for reference is here:  http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=159148.
