m42 tining chain gasket
« on: July 30, 2011, 04:12:55 PM »
I have just rebuilt my m42 engine and its leaking oil from teh timing chain gasket in a few places, i think i have the wrong type of gasket as my mate says there isa  few different ones.

I have a motor from an early e36, it has the 53mm big end bolts not the 47mm ones.

can you ge thte casing off with out taking the head off?

is this the problem ?

thanks

Yes, you can remove the Upper and Lower timing case without removing the head.

That being said, there is a fair bit of dismantling pre-timing covers. You'll need to remove all the pulleys, water pump, thermostat housing, crank sensor, cam sensor, upper/lower rad hoses and obviously the fan shroud, fan and viscous clutch.

As well lower ignition wire heat shield, the valve cover, and then you can remove the upper cover. The lower cover you will need to remove the crank bolt and that seal ring before removal.

As for the gaskets, I used the parts listed below, with a bit of gasket maker and haven't seen any leaking from my m42.

11-14-1-721-802-M30 - Gasket Set, Lower Front Chain Case Cover
11-14-1-721-919-M17 - Gasket Set, Upper Front Chain Case Cover
11-14-1-247-837-M30 - Gasket, Top of Lower Chain Case
11-14-1-439-570-M104- Front Main Seal

If you decide to do this, remember not to pry anything apart, start all your bolts by hand to make sure they thread properly, aluminum is very soft.

Hello,

Taking this post from the grave but i have also a question about the gaskets for the timming cover.
My engine is M42 from a e36 of 1993, but i'm not sure about the month.
There are two types of gaskets for this engine:
  • Gasket Set, Lower Front Chain Case Cover 11 14 1 721 802
  • Gasket Set, Upper Front Chain Case Cover 11 14 1 721 919

>September 93
  • Gasket Set, Lower Front Chain Case Cover 11 14 1 247 633
  • Gasket Set, Upper Front Chain Case Cover 11 14 1 247 429

Can i use the newer one? What is the difference between them?

go to http://bmwfans.info/ and put in the last seven of your VIN. It will give you the year and production month.

Honestly I'd just skip the use of paper gaskets on the timing case and just use Yamabond or Great Stuff.  The paper gaskets always seem to leak.

Since this post has been revived, I'll revise my statement from years ago that the Water Pump needs to be removed to remove the lower timing case, as it actually does not.

+1 on Colins post, I used paper gaskets but honestly didn't trust that they would seal and use a VERY light application of Loctite RTV Black Gasket maker on each side. No leaks 2 years and running.

bought the >Septermber 93 set and they are not paper, they are metallic.
Will install tomorrow and probably will use some Black Gasket maker in the process to fill any gap.
