Update: hit 344k miles yesterday in the BMW. It's about time to replace the steering rack as it is leaking(totally disclosed when I bought it) and squeals every so often. It looks rather easy to complete and tire discounters owes me an alignment so that works out.
My 15yr old son has pretty much claimed it as his car. He has his learner permit and he simply will not drive any other car than the e30.

I finally got rid of the nightmare Audi. Traded even for a '87 Porsche 944 (n/a) with 117k miles on it so have been spending allot of my spare time playing with that. Crazy part is my kids are still fighting over who gets to drive the e30 because it is such a smooth car compared to the 944.

If you cannot tell by now. I am the guy who loves to clean cars up and maintain to an OCD level. I really don't really care how fast it is. I just want it to run forever and look as good as possible all the time. I have been told that I could polish a turd enough to make it sparkle... :/

I know the feeling, own both E30 & 944. Porsche is a sports car. E30 is not. Here's my 944 Turbo

My 318i feels like a sports car compared to my Mazda MPV...

BTW, I just approved a for sale thread sorta out your way (Toledo)...you might be able to get a good deal on that steering rack. I might be heading out that way if he's ready to deal...I'm always interested in spares.

I know this is old, but noone noticed the cam timing gears are pointy indicating extreme wear, those look like shark teeth compared to new! I was searching for "rust" and this thread came up due to the word use. Sorry to zombie this thread for my observation, but I had to point it out!

Since you brought it up.

I actually wondered about that myself but as the main pulley would not budge and that meant I couldn't reseal the lower timing case lower gasket, replace the chain, etc? So putting a new set of sprockets on a worn chain didn't seem like a good idea either so... I have a complete motor (85k miles on it) waiting for the day this one bites the proverbial bullet. Also in the mix is the amount of rust and it is driven by my 16 yr old kid. I learned allot about that kind of ROI on my older kids vw gti.

Appreciate you worrying about it though.
It's at or around 353k now.

Awesome, and glad you saw the comment as intended. I wasn't trying to be inflamatory, I just thought it should be mentioned. I just pulled my cover to inspect my timing parts and it caught me eye because of that.
