Engine Block / VIN comparison?

Perhaps someone with more experience can enlighten me ... I recently started the mess under the intake and also the timing component replacement.  The engine looks like it might have been pulled and/or replaced by the previous owner.  I've spotted the following under all the hoses on the engine block  BMW 1715477 231190.  My VIN WBAAF9317MEE72975


I'd like to do the following:

1.  Verify if I have the original engine  - is there a serialized number that should match the vin?  Where is it located?

2.  If the engine has been changed, can I match it back to the donor vehicle?

3.  Can the dealer verify if this engine was ever part of the warranty service for the profile gasket?
