Headgasket replacement, what else should be done
« on: May 18, 2011, 05:19:00 PM »
think the headgasket failed, getting typical signs of it, white smoke, overheating, brown coolant...

a local mechanic wants to re-seat the valves due to high mileage, is that typical?

what else should get done while the head is off?  ill def look at the cam tooths for pointiness and such.

should i just get the profile gasket done again since it's all apart?

profile gasket: yes
new water pump: yes
T-stat: also
coolant flush
if time and money: valve job
and i'd also redo bottom end too, get a fresh engine!
check the timing components. generally pointy gears = redo all of it so won't have to find a new head in a few K miles because a guide snapped.

And depending on your ambitions with the car (go FI / stock / N/A beast) this is an excellent time to choose a suitable HG for future goals
My 02 cents...
