I can't get my driveshaft to fit up to the new guibo.

I am installing an M42 from a 1991 318is into my 1600, along with the five speed and driveshaft from the same car. The driveshaft comes to about 2mm short of the guibo and won't slide anymore forward. If I drive the bolts on, the guibo just deforms. I tried greasing it up, but to no avail. What am I doing wrong? Any ideas?

Is the pilot bearing/bushing clean and properly installed? If you have some grease in there it'll never bolt down.

Is there a bushing or bearing in the end of the driveshaft? Is it just p/n 26117526611? I'll order another one of those.

What do you mean by "If you have some grease in there it'll never bolt down"?

I thought that grease would help to ease it on. What is the proper installation procedure?

It's been a while since I looked at one of these, I can't recall if that bushing is blind or not. Yep, it's 26117526611 that I'm talking about, "centering sleeve."

At least I think that's a blind bushing, can't recall for sure. If it is, I'll bet that's the problem. If not, maybe the guibo is too short or too small internally? Are you sure it's a manual tranny guibo? The auto & manual ones are a different thickness from what I've seen.

wasn't sure from your post, but have you tried loosening off the adjustment clamp on the driveshaft just to the rear of the center bearing and trying to gain a little more length?

also, what you might try, is bolt the driveshaft to the guibo (so it will be deformed), loosen the driveshaft adjustment collar, drive the car a short distance, and the driveshaft should adjust itself to the proper length so the guibo is not deformed. then tighten the adjustment collar and be on your way.

I installed a new pilot bushing and that solved everything.
