bmwfans shows part #18 as the reverse light switch, which is why I was confused...

Got me.  Nobody seems to have that info.  I have often wondered why the upper part of the bellhousing has that squarish hump...but I have no idea.  Maybe someone else will chime in?

Potentially it could be for other cars.  Th 240 went into a lot of Euro models.  I'd be willing to bet that a cruise cancel switch or a starter inhibit switch could occupy that location.  Next time I'm under the car I'll see if it's connected to anything, or just a blind plug.

its the reverse sensor, i took a better look at my tranny, there is nothing where that diagram shows part #18
