Noisy gearbox
« on: April 27, 2011, 12:04:32 PM »
ever since i bought my car its had quite a whine from the gearbox, clutch master cylinder an slave cylinder have been changed as well as a fluid change a year ago but stil the whine persists.
what i want to ask is has anyones gearbox completely failed to the point where no gears can be found and the car needs recovered. currently 158,000miles on the clock.

Mine has over 280k miles, gearbox is pretty quiet.  Diff is a tad noisy, but not annoyingly so.

I did note that the 'box got to be quieter after I changed 75w140 gear oil out for full-synth ATF.  Shifts better as well, especially in the cold.  I have an ATF-label Getrag 240 though.  There were three specs for lubes, seems BMW was random about which 'box each car ended up with.  Do you have a label on the passenger side of the gearbox housing?

what fluid did you use?
I recommend Redline MTL, usually quites em down a bit and makes shifting easier.

+1, can't go wrong with Redline.  Just be sure you get the one advised for your 'box.  ATF is a pretty good idea in the yellow label 'boxes IIRC.  BMW-only for the Green label.

How many gears make noise? My e36 blew after driving after driving about 30k with noise from 1-4 but 5th quiet. Mine was pretty loud too.. I think the previous owner screwed me by being an incompentent Doosh and not knowing how to drive. It went at 130k. I'd def swap fluid and drive it till its done.
