Wheel Bearing Question??
« on: March 16, 2011, 11:21:18 PM »
Hey guys, im looking to purchase a new set of front wheel bearings. I saw on ebay there was a wheel bearing that functioned for abs? So does that mean i have to get these "abs specific" front wheel bearings, because i thought all E30 wheel bearings were the same abs or not? please help me out, thankyou.

I wasn't aware of a difference.  I'd take a look on RealOEM.com just to make 100% sure.

Says the man who looked for a response 28 days later...

I think it is because this forum is pretty specific to an engine/model year that was only in the e30s in 91 & 92, and in the e36 for a few years.

Wheel Bearing Question??
there is a toothed ring that is an integral part of the wheel bearing assembly. it cannot be removed. but i also know that some e30's did not come with abs from the factory. so they may have received wheel bearing assemblies without the toothed abs ring. i imagine it would have to be a different part number all together.

The non-ABS wheel bearings lack the toothed ring, but the non-ABS wheel bearings are hard to find. Luckily, you can remove the toothed ring to convert an ABS wheel bearing to a non-ABS wheel bearing. According to the BavAuto, to convert the ABS wheel bearing to a non-ABS wheel bearing, put the wheel mounting flange in a bench vise and take a hammer and chisel to it to break off the toothed ring.
