Megasquirt wiring on the e30 is
« on: March 07, 2011, 09:33:58 AM »
I have just finished building the megasquirt ECU after 3 months of on and off building!
Done the various mods for our car to run a PWM idle control valve and installed an extra BIP 373 coil driver to run wasted spark.

I have been trying stage by stage to get this wired up to the car but it seems very confusing,
i am not reading a crank signal from the VR sensor, so i cannot go any further till i find out why.
I have measured the voltage with a multimeter and read .016 to .04 v fluctuating.

Anyone done a megasquirt install on an e30 is?

help from the diyautotune seems to be taking days at a time.

Would be very much appreciated if somebody could give me a hand!

Thanks,
Tam

I've been following your posts, but I have no idea.  The sensor should be very similar to the M5x part as far as spec.  Voltage should be higher, I'd guess in the 0-5v range.

We just tend to test them & go with the right reading.  600 ohms, give or take.  From the little I've read, MS seems to have a lot of trouble with trigger wheel sensor conditioning on BMWs, among others.

Hey Tam,
I actually had someone build a plug and play for my car. I didn't have to wire anything but one tap to the AFM and the MAP sensor.

Sorry....

You might have more luck at http://www.diyautotune.com. I've been casually looking for the same thing for a couple of years and haven't found a well documented project yet.

Doing mine for the past 2 months, I had similar issue and resolved it by adjusting the VR pots.

A multimeter won't help you with the crank's VR sensor. You need an oscilloscope for that.

Are you using MSII on a V3 PCB? If so, it should have the parts included for VR sensor input. There are 2 signal lines coming off of the crank sensor, one black & one yellow. I can't remember which one is the one you want, so try them both as inputs for the crank signal. This stuff is reasonably well documented in the MegaManual. The M42 uses a 60-2 toothed wheel encoder on the crank.

You should also look into using the cam position sensor (VR as well) with the crank sensor. That will allow you to run coil-per-cylinder ignition rather than wasted spark. I don't think the stock coils are really rated for double-duty (which is what WS mode would be for them) & they may die prematurely.

If this is an older board, you'll need to run the MS-Extra! firmware & build a LM1815 conditioning circuit. It is a pain in the ass.

Visit HERE for a plethora of 318iS stuff and some other randomness.  Would you say I have a, plethora, of pinatas?

i didn't expect that many replies lol.
i have the megasquirt 2 v 3
after doing the extra mods this was when the problem ocurred....
i was going to run just the crank sensor and wasted spark but after reading i may go sequential and install 4 bip's.
how do i use the cam sensor too?

For the cam sensor, you need to build an LM1815 VR conditioning circuit. You can squeeze one onto the proto area, but it's a tight fit. DIYautotune has a board for $35 that has 2 of the LM1815 circuits which may be better and/or easier for you than the proto area.

I built up a MS2 with mods for running coil per cylinder on my 2002, and was able to squeeze the circuit onto the proto area. I still have yet to install it on my 2002. Have to mod the front cover for a cam sensor I bought. Too many projects, not enough time.
