M42 used in Kit Car
« on: March 04, 2011, 11:57:31 AM »
Hi,  been reading and around for awhile and thought it was about time I put up a pic of a project coming to the end of the first phase.

Stripped an E36 318is and rebuilt into a Kit Car GKD Legend.

Small case LSD 3.38, COP conversion from the later coil pack, short shift, induction and a somewhat non-standard M42 exhaust.

Thanks to all those who post so knowledgedly on this site, very generous and helpful to those of us with less ability and knowledge.

End result is now all ready for getting the registration process done, passed the various other legal requirements now. So, should be out on the road with Sunshine soon :)

Another Pic

Will get some detailed pics of parts done, but got a few other jobs backlogged now ;)

A few details:
Starting car was a Jan 1995 318is:
  • Total weight is now ~650Kg with full 42ltr tank, so more than a bit lighter than the E36.
  • BMW 318is disc brakes all round, steel braided brake hoses, not really felt the need to upgrade the calipers or pads yet.
  • Suspension is fully independent GAZ adjustable all round.
  • LSD at 3.38 on E36 mounting plate and Getrag 250 with Z3M short shift.
  • M42 with COP conversion from the later coil pack(makes it a bit more awkward)
  • Induction Kit.
  • Stainless 4 to 1 exhaust pre cat

To do:
  • Spare engine for a little tinkering.
  • Collecting bits for flywheel lightening.
  • Contemplating supercharing but space is too small for Downing Atlantic Kit.
  • A few cosmetic light changes.

A few more pics, car got a bit dirty standing around on the drive and in the garage.

On COP plate you'll see the amended plate to hold the later loom in place, not perfect and you'll also see there is some cleaning to be done.

A couple of pics trying to show the exhaust mainfold route around the steering column. You really get that M42 crackle at higher revs from this :)

and

Intake - used one intended for an M3,  work to be done here to box in with a colder air feed, makes a good sound but gets a bit lost with the exhuast as a driver.

Excuse the dirt

Shows in UK.
Will be on a club stand on edge of Stoneleigh in May but not "showing", in October may be on Exeter stand but need to complete a few little projects to feel good about putting it there.
May come along to a few BMW meets / shows or with a "real" BMW, weather dependent.

Exhaust was a www.zeroexhausts.co.uk  work is really excellent and the sound is just great and will settle down to a bit deeper tone.

That is simply stunning.  Superb bit of work.  Great combo too - British design with a bit of German engineering.  Best of both worlds?

Thanks for posting it here - put some vids up!
