Author Topic: Decel vibration/rattle after flywheel install (Read 7030 times)

I put a JB flywheel in my car yesterday and now I have a decelleration vibration that matches with engine RPM (~4000-2500rpm). If I push the clutch in it goes away. I had no vibrations at all before. Thoughts?

the guibo was in good shape before install right? maybe its on its way out?

how does the car drive with the 9 pounder? I'm still pondering the idea of getting an aluminum flywheel.

Anyone have any figurs for play of the input shaft on the trans? I can't seem to find any measuring specs anywhere. Perhaps a known good trans you could measure?

While we're on the subject... does anyone have any trans disassebly/assembly/rebuild documentation?

check the online repair manual..

what kind of tranny's do we have? the 265 getrag or the 240? I have a full description on the assembly of the input shaft on the getrag 240

This is a really horrible situation because it's making me look at M50 swaps:(

Also... who knows about the Getrag 250 swap... as in the E36 318 / Z3 trans. I know some people on here have done it. Just looking for what's involved in case I have to pick up a trans and that's what I find.

Many thanks to the 'dude' listed above. While the info I got from him didn't give me the spec I was looking for it did show me how the trans is put together and that 4th gear is the one you're going to hear the most from if the IP shaft bearing takes a poo. What do you know... 4th gear is by far the loudest and the only one that makes noise when turning the trans by hand.

Now... do I buy another one or rebuild it.

If I take it apart I'm doing the 2nd and 3rd gear synchros while I'm in there. Synchros are $75 each and the input shaft bearing is $100. It almost certainly needs the needle bearing at the bottom of the shaft... another $11. There's at least another $40 is misc seals that one would be stupid not to replace while you're in there.

So I'd be at least $301 into the trans if I don't find any other issues while I'm in there. Add into it that this will be my first trip into the Getrag 240 so I'm not overly enthusiastic about dumping money into it.

I found a 131K mile trans a local wreckers for $275. Sound good?

i have the same flywheel installed as of last May and I got chatter aswell. I actually just blew up my clutch about 3 weeks ago and I'm pretty sure it had something to do w/ less vibration damping b/c of the now single mass flywheel as opposed to the stock dual mass. I did some research into upgrades and basically that the trick of the trade w/ our e30 M42's is to get the lightweight flywheel and then pair it w/ a complete stock clutch kit from a '95-'96 M3 w/ S50 motor (not S52). Apparently the clutch is supposed to be a perfect fit and has built in vibration dampeners on the clutch disc like other discs paired w/ single mass flywheels and will def yield much more clamping force and can withstand the newly freed power from the lighter flywheel a lot better than the stock M42 clutch. By the way my clutch was only 14 months old when it completely disintegrated. My mechanic said that he had never seen anything like it but everything was ok except for the clutch disc. I ordered the M3 S50 clutch from http://www.theeurodepot.com for $225 and BavarianAuto (who told me about the trick setup) tried to sell it to me for $418. I'll let you know how it works out when I get my car back w/ the new clutch

S50 powered M3s have a 240mm twin mass clutch. We have a 215mm clutch. I don't see it working too well unless you're using the S50 slywheel as well... and you still wont get the sprung center disk out of the deal.

I'll be buying a stage 2 Kevlar clutch from South Bend Clutch when the time comes. It's hard to beat a Kevlar faced disk and high clamp pressure plate for $325.

The proper single mass M42 clutch is usually listed right next to the standard twin mass clutch. Ever wonder why the parts systems want to know if you have A/C? The non-A/C clutch uses the same pressure plate as stock but the disk has a sprung center.

Annnnnnnddddd.... it wasn't the trans. I got my hands on another far lower milage trans and as soon as I got it I had my doubts since the input shaft had about the same amount of movement mine does.

Next up... the clutch. It's sounding more like a clutch rattle than I originally thought.

what about bearing in crankshaft end? They was different. It could be that it is not right size.

You mean the pilot bearing hole? I went Getrag 240 for Getrag 240... straight across so everything was the same size. It made it with my stock trans as well.
