1st gear slippage...
« on: January 19, 2011, 12:51:05 AM »
Ok so here's my question, if I'm at a stop sign, stop light, any intersection that requires me to come to a complete stop, I have to pull the car out of 1st and move it around a bit and then when it's time to move throw it back into 1st and then I can go...otherwise the tranny will throw itself out of gear and it looks/feels about the same as stalling out with the exception of the motor is still running so i have to re-engage into 1st gear and I just look like someone that can't drive a manual...any ideas? I know it's an OEM shifter and assembly from 1991 so bushings are most likely shot and I'm going to get the SSK from pelican soon, but other than replacing bushings any other ideas or could it be something more pressing? Thanks all!

:( its either shifter bushings, tranny/motor mounts or,,,,,, Bad synchros.....

Don't let this go! if its just shifter bushings youll eventually ruin the synchros if they are not bad!

So if I get the SSK that comes with new Delrin bushings, and that's a no-go on fixing it, then look at the mounts? Thanks for all the help and ideas...

It did it a little more today than normal, but it doesn't feel like it's losing 1st gear or any power/torque when I'm in 1st gear at all...weird?

Did you fix this yourself, or take to a shop? Hard to do? Thanks for any and all info...

I replaced the transmission with another one.  Its not really worth it to me to spend a couple thousand on a rebuilt transmission when you can get a used one for $2-300.  Replacing the transmission is pretty easy, exp on a lift.
