what is your average miles per gallon
« on: January 10, 2011, 01:23:03 AM »
Just want to get an idea of what mileage people are getting in their m42s.

my engine has about 245k miles im running 15w/40 oil syn has new BKR6EQUP cop conversion, mess under the intake fixed, 4:10 medium case diff, idles and runs like a champ. I use premium gas from shell cheveron etc. On a full tank of fuel im getting about 320 miles. I drive it conservativly for the most part, and averaging what I think is about 24 mpg average combined hwy/city driving. Should I be getting more, `if so what do you guys suggest. Thanks

Generally I average 28 mpg, 1991 318is. Alpine white. Have had it 10 years and despite minor modifications its stayed consistent.

I average 23mpg city, 32 highway.  I get better mileage with 93 octane though, anyone else noted this?  I can't explain it, but it's pretty consistent.

I'm trying to bump mileage up as far as I can.  To that end, I've done the following:
skinny 14" bottle caps with hard 175/70 tires at 41psi
3.73 diff
5w30 Mobil1 semi-synthetic motor oil
full synthetic ATF in the transmission
semi-synthetic 70w90 in the diff
throttle body heater intact
stock air filter & no chip
watered my coolant down (33% Zerex G05)
deleted the P/S belt
COP with NGK coppers
As little junk as possible in the car, just coolant & a few quarts of motor oil
I also tend to 'top up' the battery

Overall MPG...29, half highway driving.

Future plans include an 88degC thermostat & fan stat, LED & HID lights, engine fan delete and some tame aero mods. If I can find a lighter battery and a smaller-capacity alternator that fits, I'm doing that too.

I get avg 29-30 mpg, that is back roads driving to work and back every day, with a little stop and go traffic tossed in there, and it is worthy to note that I drive like an ass.

E30 318is w/ 220k on the clock, mess under the intake delete, (sort of) a cold air intake, electric fan conversion, and some general weight loss like removal of power steering, AC, most of the interior, etc.  The car without me in it weighs about 2300 lbs or so.

update to my car specs tires are stock bottle caps 195/60r14 michellen pilot exaltos  91 octane highest here, is lip(dont know if that helps with aerodynmics but looks cool), still have power steering and ac( love the ac btw), I will say this that on a long highway drive i get no less than 32 miles per gallon driving at 70mpg constant how im not sure but thats how it is what really kills is city driving most in part due to my 4.10 diff i would love to find a 3.73 and put it in to help mileage and engine noise at highway speeds.
